I know this all too well. 😔❤️‍🩹
CPTSD survivors often experience this urge to apologize, again & again, to everyone & anyone-- & also this simultaneous resentment at feeling the need to apologize or justify anything to anyone.

It's like a tug of war between our "fawn" & "fight" trauma responses.

Happy Thanksgiving today to those who celebrate! 🦃🍷🍁😊 Take time to appreciate what is important in your life and be grateful for the small things. I am so grateful for my supportive family and friends. I also appreciate my friends here on #Bluesky! You are all so important to me. Be well! 😌

You don't owe anyone an explanation or apology today for what you like, what you want, or who you are.

Remember there is power in leaning into what makes you, you. Remember & reconnect to what turns you on-- for real, not what "should" light you up according to "them."

Reminder to self for today.
“Learning to be gentle with yourself is one of the most important skills you’ll ever develop.” Kristin Neff

We’re allowed to ease our grip on the things we carry. A little softness towards ourselves can change so much.

Scene in my backyard. I wanted to capture before the wind takes all the leaves down! Love Autumn! 🍁🍂🎃 Early rain this morning brought crisp air this afternoon. 😊

Give yourself time & space & grace. That's not warm & fuzzy fluff; it's key to getting our nervous system to work w/ us, instead of against us. Even giving ourselves the option of doing it now vs. doing it in five minutes can help.

Reject coercion & shame as "motivation" tools.

CPTSD can do a real number on our ability to express some of the most important things about ourselves. One of the biggest frustrations of many survivors is carrying entire worlds around inside us-- but running into walls when we try to put the most basic words to our experience.

I happened to have childhood trauma and trauma that occurred later in life. Recovery is the same no matter what.
Because your trauma did not happen while you were growing up does not mean it's not complex trauma. Situations where we're harmed due to a power differential, where the pain was inescapable & unfolded over time, happen to people of all ages.

CPTSD is not "just" childhood trauma.

My view right now. 😌 Love coastal Maine. So peaceful and therapeutic. I have needed this for such a long time.

What they think of our struggles or our recovery is none of our business.

Chances are they profoundly misunderstand both-- & attempting to explain it to them would be like trying to explain physics to a terrier.

There are trauma survivors reading this who have never felt refreshed, ever, by a night of sleep-- & who have been made to feel inadequate & broken by the cultural assumption that "sleep hygiene" choices explain most sleep problems.

(They don't. Not when it comes to trauma.)

On this Mother's Day, blessings to all of you who have or had loving, encouraging, and selfless mothers. For those of you who don't or didn't, I see you and validate what you endured. I hope this day finds you peaceful and calm. There is hope. 🫂❤️‍🩹🫶

Trauma recovery is not magic or mysterious. Think of it foremost as a project of identifying how we've been conditioned by our past, so we can start making actual choices about our future. It always comes back to that.

Many trauma survivors have the experience of being convinced any form of happiness or positive feelings will necessarily come at an awful cost. It's an insidious bit of programming our abusers install to try to make us "allergic" to feeling better-- & it deserves to be SHREDDED.

Here's to every trauma survivor who feels as if they're some kind of alien trying to mimic the "normal" feelings & experiences of the humans around us. Trauma has this way of convincing us we're not part of the species-- when the truth is, we've been CONDITIONED to feel this way.
