Extremely proud to be a Best of 2025 pick from @deathpanel.bsky.social. I think this is some of the best thinking I did all year and the analysis from April has held up wrt the many dangers and failures of the fascist situation on.soundcloud.com/TIEwJGTTOkCj...

I wrote this, please read! (As usual when I have a thing come out I'm acutely aware of its limits but fwiw I'm excited this is out. I learned a lot writing it. Also: JHI blog editors were incredibly rigorous and vigorous, made the piece better as object and the process of writing it more edifying!)
In an essay in the JHI Blog’s forum on political economy, Nate Holdren elaborates three levels of analytical abstraction at which intellectual historians invoke the term "political economy," turning our attention to the way that capitalism structurally conditions ignorance of the social totality.
Three Meanings of Political Economy: Reflections on Intellectual History, Marxism, and Capitalism’s Unthought

Transcript in progress currently. Hoping to finish by this evening, then it's off to @reallandsend.bsky.social for final editing before it goes live ❤️
In our latest, we look back at 2025, a year where normalization slipped into naturalization, as a cadre of villains who rose to prominence on the back of covid denial took the reins of the federal government to play out their revenge fantasies.

It’s Covid Year Six.

It has been a bracing moment for American federalism, with both unprecedented efforts to extend executive control over state and local govts, novel forms of subnational resistance. Where is federalism going? Paul Nolette and I have edited a new issue of Publius on that question. Short thread:

1) pay doctors a living wage but not so much their class interest is more aligned with the elite than the working class

2) nationalize the hospitals and open more; reopen hospitals that have closed due to our current privatized system (the actual culprit)

3) doctors can’t opt out if they want to
How much are you going to pay doctors?

Which current hospitals get shut down ?

What happens if doctors opt out of the system ? Who is going to invest in new curative therapies. You ?

How much in taxes pr year do you think it's possible to collect if you took every penny from billionaires?
Half the amount that everyone currently pays could provide universal healthcare. Private health companies don’t need to exist. Eliminate them. And use your collective buying power and economies of scale to get it done. Every cent of their profit is healthcare denied.

People are angry, and that anger is real. But MAHA redirects it away from the structural forces that create this crisis towards conspiracy and scapegoating.
