I feel like I should be doing something constructive, but Pippin has his annual checkup at the vet at 1:30, so no time, really, to get involved in anything.

This always baffled me. I never knew how to correctly write a pre-1752 English date.

It led me to write this small blog about calendar confusion.

Following the Leaves: What I Learned from Unexpected Ancestry Hints
Have you ever noticed an Ancestry hint for someone who isn't actually mentioned in the record? While reviewing hints for my great-great-grandparents, I came across three Civil War–related hints that puzzled me. These records were being suggested for Mary Foster Crawford, the wife of Washington Marion Crawford. At first, I thought they might include a reference to Mary — perhaps as a widow or family contact.

Gonna make mine a triple: "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Witness", and "42"

I'm curious about the history of presidential candidates choosing running mates. In my lifetime, I've wondered why the nominee never partners with one of the also-rans who did well. Biden could have picked Bernie or Buttigieg. Is there a reason for that, other than sour grapes?

Hey, @nytimes.com: You say a Games subscription is 75% off, but $18 is not 75% off; $12.50 would be 75% off a $50 subscription. I tried it on the monthly rate, too; 75% off $6 would be $1.50, not $2. I don't doubt you became journalists because you can't do math, but can't you use a calculator?

This is a disaster. There are papers only available on Chronicling America and nowhere else. Not to mention, if you're trying to track down a hard copy of an undigitized newspaper, their database is far and away the best one-stop-shop for that type of search. #genealogy
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down
