TIL that the Byzantine Navy was commanded by a MEGADUKE and I think that's my new favourite military rank. MEGADUKE

I've just been exposed to the AI generated Coca Cola ad and it's *bad*. Like, it almost looks like a bland, soulless animated short unless you know what to look for and then it really stands out. And this was *more expensive* than animating it conventionally would have been.

Thinking about the Johnny Bravo episode where Johnny buys a really fancy and expensive shovel and insists on using it for everything even though it inconveniences him and annoys everyone around him.

Weirdly applicable to a weirdly large number of things IRL, really.

I'm firmly of the opinion that Rogue Trader should be the default setting and game experience in 40k. Sure you can have a wargame but only if it's an unloved spinoff with a cult following like BFG. RT is just so much better as a POV for experiencing the setting than "gruff bald man in armour"

my most butlerian jihad coded belief is that we should probably make it illegal – and more importantly, we should work toward a cultural consensus that it is immoral – to design a computer program whose interface uses the first person

The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either

Open AI loses copyright case in Germany.

Judge Elke Schwager summarized the case saying that if you want to build something and need components, "then you purchase them and do not use the property of others."
Blow for OpenAI in Germany as court rules song lyrics used illegally
A German court ruled on Tuesday that OpenAI violated copyright on nine popular songs in a lawsuit that marked another attempt to prevent the free use of artists' content online. The Munich Regional Co...

Laughing hysterically at the Game Awards best indie nominations having maybe, charitably, two indie games in the entire lineup, and one is only indie in the sense that a Valve game is indie

Just when I thought I couldn't hate Riot any more than I already do, I find out about this shit
3 years ago today, Riot Games offered me a job making more money than I ever thought I’d make in my life. I had 19 interviews over 2.5 months to get it. Partner and I were moving to LA for it. I put in notice at my job and apartment.

2 weeks later they rescinded the offer due to “headcount issues”.

You know, as much as living in interesting times does suck, it is sometimes worth it for the comedy value of getting news like "the current US president sucked Bill Clinton's dick at least once"

The very worst thing about bsky taking off is that there are so many liberals on here and none of them know how to post or how to be even remotely clever or funny

The Fermi Paradox is such a fundamentally unserious concept. "If you multiply these 20 variables together you get a wrong number and that's spooky" brother I can incorrectly estimate the number of piano tuners in the country but that's not something I'm going to label a fucking paradox

Geoff Keighley really is the perfect representative of the gaming industry:
-unreservedly self serving
-pretends to care about the people actually making the product
-loves to make performative gestures that ultimately go nowhere and help no one
-would almost certainly sell out to the saudis

This is the kinda shit you get when your brain‘s gotten cooked on twenty years of popular culture "AIs as an unnuanced coding for human slavery" productions.

You get men stalk people on LinkedIn to accuse them of being "pro-slavery".
Ok, I wasn’t going to out him because up until now he had not been antagonistic, but he outed himself so here’s the guy who searched for me on LinkedIn to pressure me to compromise my safety by meeting a strange man in person who has already compared my belief that AI is not conscious to “slavery.”
Jelena, your views are pro-slavery.

Sorry youtubers but I am not watching your 3 hour long video essays, especially if the title is some artsy reference that tells me nothing about what the video is actually about. If I see anything over 20 minutes you'd better have a real good reason.

This bit about a pulse laser weapon sounding like thunder includes the crash AND rumble of thunder, btw, for the same reason as in actual thunder

The air expands supersonically along the beam, making a series of sonic booms, which you are varying distances from and thus hear at different times
Also, the air ionized and thermally heated along the path of the beam would then rapidly expand, easily exceeding the speed of sound - leaving a low pressure area behind, which air rushes back into

This is the same dynamic that makes thunder sound like it does. So, uh, the laser sounds like thunder

This really sucks. I personally suspect they were just given a 10 year rights licence and that's expiring now, just a sad reality of our fucked up copyright system. BSG Deadlock is fantastic, if you don't have it, do get it while it's still around, it's 100% worth it.
Sorry to SpacedockPost on Sojourn, but just want to signal boost this unfortunate situation.

The game and DLCs are heavily discounted on GOG so grab em if you've ever wanted to.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock was my first gig with a major sci-fi IP and a fond memory for me. Very sad outcome.

God, a thousand times this.

That's the thing with dopamine being tied to task initiation - there's a set of gears that won't - CAN'T - engage in my brain, but none of my problems are with analysis.

I can be fully aware of all the necessary steps, and stressing about starting, and just... not.
