When you look at Turkey and ask why Erdoğan’s regime chose to jail a political opponent now, the answer lies in a climate of impunity — as I argued in @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/world/europe...
Erdogan jailed his political rival in an age of impunity
The Turkish president’s calculation was callous and plain: I can jail my main opponent. If they put forward another, I’ll jail that one too

The second allegation threatens his mayoralty immediately.

The interior minister has the power to unseat any mayor who is accused of terror charges, even if they have not yet been convicted.

Dozens of pro-Kurdish party mayors in southeast Turkey have been replaced in this way.

We are going on strike against the unprecedented cuts in academic teaching and research because these cuts are not based on any reasonable motivation, but are the result of the resentment of the anti-intellectual far-right government taking revenge on the so-called elite.

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."

She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

Eggers’s Nosferatu is a disappointing remake. It made me want to rewatch Murnau’s original—a film I already revisit at least 2 times a year for my class!

This is a strong case against the idea that early/silent cinema is “primitive” while contemporary cinema is its apex +
