Thanks, Megan. Get it while it's hot, folks. SCOTUS personal jurisdiction jurisprudence is a mess. And Justice Busby writes a thorough entreaty to the Court to fix it.

I'll also have a new post coming soon about certified questions and subject matter jurisdiction!

This is hilarious. She wants to be released 7 years early for doing because prison sucks and she's doing good things.
NEW: Lawyers for Elizabeth Holmes are asking the court to reduce her 11-year sentence, pointing to her work in prison helping inmates with legal issues and tutoring prisoners on Spanish, French and math and science.

“Incarceration has been a harrowing and humbling experience.”

SCOTX orders today. As I predicted in covering the oral argument in Roe v. Patterson, the Court's decision is very narrow. At argument, the Justices expressed reticence (given degree of agreement btwn the parties) to go beyond this case. See here for argument coverage: substack.com/home/post/p-...

A few months back, I posted at 14th & Colorado about amicus practice at #SCOTX. Today's orders list highlights the importance, value, and flexible nature of amicus at the Court. In August 2024, the Court issued a per curiam on a probate issue. The original PC included footnote 8 pictured. /1

Just noticed that #SCOTX oral argument calendar seems to have been filled with the January 31 grants. Anything granted at this point will be heard next term.

Even if you wanted to specialize in discretionary review type work, SCOTX is great. And there are lawyers who do insane amounts of SCOTX work (it’s like a mini scotus bar—you see a number of people at the Court quite frequently)
What I tell people is this: It depends upon the kind of work you want to do. If you really want to do the sophisticated administrative appeals and SCOTUS work, probably best to try and get to DC. There are folks who do it out in the provinces, but it is harder.
I had lunch with a brilliant young lawyer yesterday, who wanted to talk about the Houston appellate market. The question was more or less this: "my mentors are telling me the only path to a prestigious appellate practice is in Washington. But I really want to come to Houston."

Dick Wolf's shows have a serious love for Canada Goose jackets. Half the character's in the Chicago shows, the main characters in FBI.

I see so many petitions/complaints that list the principal place of business of an LLC. Folks, that is not the relevant issue for jurisdiction. The domicile of each of its members is! It is not a corporation.

You also have to appreciate how many typos you can get in 280 characters while listening to Bluey and doing dishes.
You have to appreciate how seriously Blue takes the speedy trial very seriously. Trial on the same day as the crime!? Even Dick Wolf couldn’t have dreamed of this. (Yes, this is what goes through your head on 300th rewatch.)

I'd previously written about the case at 14th & Colorado. You can read about the case below.

Case preview: adamshniderman.substack.com/p/this-week-...

I will have an opinion wrap up there soon.
Big orders list from #SCOTX today. CJ Hecht with several opinions. In Webster v. CLD, an opinion by Justice Young, the Court holds the courts lack subject matter jurisdiction & the disciplinary board was wrong to go after Webster/(presumably Paxton)/etc.

While we’re ranting about fonts: I dislike small caps. I got used to not using them because multiple judges I worked for disliked them and bc Westlaw messes them up.

This feels like the purse version of buying a wild colored watch or unusual suit. You only do it if your collection is so deep you can afford to wear the thing like once a month or less.
I’m sure we all have thoughts on this but can I please just draw your attention to the £150,000 worth of stolen handbags that the Metropolitan Police say look like this

I love that companies will send very expensive merchandise with one piece of tape half hanging off. I send a box of stuff from five below to my niece and it’s taped like the Crown Jewels are inside.
