I’m teaching #Middlemarch, and one of my students has decided that Mr. Casaubon’s name is unpronounceable (accurate), so every single time he’s mentioned in class discussion or in writing, they give him an entirely new name. Here’s a running tally of my favorites so far:

Despite the widespread and often employer-encouraged adoption of AI tools, a new study finds that artificial intelligence chatbots "have had no significant impact on earnings or recorded hours in any occupation."
Time saved by AI offset by new work created, study suggests
Survey of 2023–2024 data finds that AI created more tasks for 8.4 percent of workers.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

idk how so many people have energy for the infighting and being snarky to people who are showing up and doing the work for the first time, like are y’all not tired from living in the fascism? I only have so much energy and I’m not dedicating it to being a weirdo to people on my side of the fight

International Women’s Day is just around the corner! Here is an article about a Victorian female author, Christina Rossetti. In Ashley Miller’s article, she discusses how Christina Rossetti’s poetry about fruitlessness and waste can provide a deeper understanding of female corporeality.

"AI" is, purely, a marketing term and a (poor) umbrella phrase for a number of different types of computerized statistical analysis, iteration and synthesis. If something is being touted as "AI" to me, it's because someone wants me to buy it, and also I probably don't need it.
Thank you for calling it machine learning and not AI. I would love a to see machine learning normalized. Calling it that deflates the tech to what it should be.

Tech/self-publishing question: my students are making “scholarly editions” of #19c short fiction and I was planning to print them using Blurb, but apparently it can’t handle notes of any kind. Any recs for other apps/platforms for #self-publishing annotated texts?
