Talking about Wine & Rugby. And the (possibly non-existent) intersection between the two.
Managed all of 5 overs at the SCG last night, but that was long enough to see Sam Konstas have his stumps rearranged, and honestly that made it all worth it

I think you misunderstand this. I have said before, there is nothing intrinsically complicated about wine - we make it complicated (and therefore intimidating) - by, for example, offering vast ranges, using specialist language, not wearing our knowledge lightly.

Articles which connect wine with people are often the most interesting, but why the stories we tell mostly those of winemakers?

Aren’t there other interesting people in wine?

I’m interested in merchants, importers, bar owners, critics - people who handle wine between bottling & drinking.

Just when I started thinking that a knock to Sam Costelow might open the door for Dan Edwards to get a Wales call-up, I remembered that he plays for the Ospreys.

So of course not.

I’d do something about the Judgment of Paris. Alan Rickman as Steven Spurrier would be great. That bloke from Independence Day as Jim Barrett. Chris Pine in a wig.

But - here’s the kicker - I’d put it actually in fucking Paris.
“If you could make a movie about anything, what would it be and who would star in it?”

The Daniel Morgan murder. Andrew Garfield would play Daniel alongside a cast of well loved English character actors. Pugh would be in there somewhere obvs. Probably Hugh Grant. Ralph Fiennes, you get the idea.

Tried to start the new series of Squid Game.

Absolutely no recollection of what happened or who was who in first series, so started the whole thing again 😂

Just went looking to see if I could find a particular wine magazine, only to discover it went out of print 18 months ago 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’ve often wondered how much money it’s possible to make in the wine trade, and suspect it’s one of those ‘how long is a piece of string’ questions.

But knowing the little I know about retail margins, my assumption is that it’s not much.

Still working through Decanter back issues. Enjoying them very much, but not sure how much use features on Languedoc Whites & Greek wines are to me while living in Aus!

Unfashionable wine opinion: I often find the Cab Shiraz blend a little unbalanced. Lots of examples that seem to be a bit heavy & gloopy.

But Bin 389 absolutely does not miss.

I’d love someone to send me on a course which teaches me how to properly plate food. I’m a decent cook, but pretty much everything I serve up looks like school dinners 😂

Anyway, this was delicious.

100% this.

Women seem so much better at planning a half decent night out.

Blokes are just beers & cheap food.

😂

Pizza or Pasta?

So I have 2 wine resolutions for 2025 so far. I reckon I’ve got room for one more. Anyone want to suggest one?

I’ll pin my top 3 & report progress through the year.

Longlegs and Dune 2 both now available on Prime & Netflix respectively.

That’s this evening sorted! Which to watch first….

Hearing someone talking about “make wine fun again” and all I’m hearing is “make wine dumb again”.
