The problem is that politicians emphasizing with the population will always lose against those who don't feel for people hurting. It's the logic of the game. Only when voters across the board start to honor soft and back peddling for the greater good, democrats will stand a chance again.
Democrats were ready to make a deal to end the shutdown after things hit a breaking point on Sunday, says our senior congressional editor Mike DeBonis.

He gives the play-by-play of the deal to our Dasha Burns in this week’s episode of #theconversation — out Friday at midnight: pod.link/1111319839

The BBC-Trump debate is wrongfully conflating

1. Bias. Every media outlet should be biased towards basic human rights and dignity. I would EXPECT such bias.

2. Standards. Reporting must be honest, without twisting facts, upholding the journalistic standards we all champion.

Both can be true.

In general, the appeal of democracies would improve with stronger incentives for political representatives to do the right thing for society - or feel the consequences. The danger of being expelled from elected office has to be immediate, constant. As it is for any other job if we fail to perform.
Did you know that in Canada, if a budget doesn’t pass the government doesn’t shut down?

Federal workers aren’t furloughed.

Funding for social services doesn’t dry up.

Failure to pass a budget triggers an election.

It puts the politicians jobs on the line.

They get the budget passed.

Interesting concept to sanction Russian oil and gas but to then grant exemptions to the countries using it. Maybe it's not about Russia in the end, but about creating a new weapon for friend-foe submission control?

That's the main point: he had a modern, forward looking vision and is charismatic, fun and genuine enough to make people believe that he really means it. Old style politics are dead, like it or not. Adapt.

The Dutch election shows that democracy is not dead, and nationalist populism is not inevitable. If liberal centrist parties promote a strong progressive agenda instead of trying to out-populize the right, their appeal can be surprisingly strong. With a positive vision the pendulum might swing back.

Since common sense will not solve car addiction, my last hope is insane chaos on the roads. I am cherishing clogged, blocked roads and frustrated drivers while zipping past them on the bicycle. And I stopped behaving car friendly; traffic jams can start for "no reason". Frustration is our friend.

BBC Inquiry's take on whether the UN Security Council is still relevant in face of it's obvious failures in past and recent history. Adds some perspective to 300 character limited rants (including mine).

Fair assessment, I would say. Unfortunately.

“The multilateral institutions that were created to try to prevent these things from happening have stopped working. Today, the UN Security Council and the UN no longer function,” Mr Lula said.

There will be a day when even the last person will understand that sealing off borders is a mission set for failure. All this wasted money could pay for positive incentives, for helping new arrivals and shaping societies from within, instead of trying to keep others out.

Or have a larger duvet beyond fighting size. Or find a partner you actually want to be close with in the night. Glad a journalist has used their time and resources to solve this. #diggingDeep
Just because you and your partner share a bed, doesn’t mean you also need to share a blanket. "We didn’t know it at the time, but we had adopted the Scandinavian sleeping method." nyti.ms/4qbOIsC

I am not an expert in this, not even an amateur, to be fair. But my fear would be that with this new stupidipedia other AI models scraping the internet will be infected with abhorrent views. At best it would lead to relativism "other sources are sceptical", at worst to a shifting bias.

Imho, not worth wasting any resources on reporting this stuff. It's not even an angle to the story. Zero value. We know about his narcissism for a decade (and more) already. If we are sliming down newsrooms and reporters, at least focus on what really matters: substance.
US President Donald Trump lashed out at Time magazine, calling a cover photo that accompanied a feature on his Middle East peace deal “the Worst of All Time.”

The magazine calls Middle East peace deal Trump’s “Triumph” — but the president is concerned about an unflattering photo.

With all these EU-"sceptics" coming to power, the EU should maybe ease the exit process. Feel free to leave. More than size, the club is stronger when everybody pulls in the same direction and none work against it. Call their bluff and let them battle it out with their mostly pro EU population.

I feel very bad for kids growing up in the US these days, exposed to all sorts of revisionist, illusionary curriculums. One day, they will have to compete on the market with soft-skilled international peers who were brought up and trained in reality.

Cancel culture and Führer cult. Alignment of courts, media, academia and corporations with government ideology. Indoctrination and mob politics. Military on patrol, unidentified agents snatching people from the streets. Health, fitness and warrior obsession. Total government control. #hasPrecedent

If we don't want the net zero transition to fall victim to populists, the narrative must change. Centers of gravity will shift, the economic world will turn upside down. It's a revolution, as always producing winners and losers. Let's at least be honest and take care of the people on the short end.

However loaded the idea of free speech is, now is the right time to reflect on, discuss, negotiate a modern definition of valuable free speech - and where it should end. Presently, all around the globe free speech and prohibiting it is used by both ends of the spectrum as an ideological weapon.

Renewables and the energy revolution are here to stay, all over the globe. The only question is who will lead, invent, and make the most money out of it. Smart technology of the future needs smart politics today, and China, if it can outplay the others, will happily use it as a power tool, soon.
For decades, European leaders have walked into international environmental meetings with the swagger of the world’s self-proclaimed climate quarterback.

Today, that image will be shattered.
