I accidentally complicated my teaching yesterday by asking students to do something based on an earlier activity. They were so into it and earnest that they immediately jumped to deriving the result instead of just using it and uncovered the need for rotating coordinate systems.

Day 2 at The Turf.
Once again the rain & I seem to have an understanding. After storms overnight, I found the Turf to be perfectly dry. Got in bit a morning & afternoon session in. Pics from morning.

The challenge to endure “difficult” ideas and speakers only extends in one direction. The pleas to tone down political violence only benefit one side. And it’s the side that is most violent toward marginalized people, which is granted bipartisan approval and protection

The bug splatter celluloid from Welsh is one is one of my favorites. It’s just so odd! This is a full size combo and is a lovely cream color. I thought my other two were in good shape but they look like caramel in comparison. #welshfountainpen #fountainpen #fountainpenrestoration

I refused to call it a the more common name in the 3D printing community. We settled on Garbage Chute which lead to this. And it is good.
Star Wars Saturday.
Trash Compactor
Our new 3D printer has a garbage chute of sorts for excess filament waste. Just seemed like it needed a trash compactor to catch the trash. I designed one inspired by the one in Kenner’s Death Star playset, complete with Dianoga monster!

If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

The original article reeks of privilege . privilge of money to repeatedly buy the same things. Size privilege knowing you can easily find something to fit. And of course a complete disdain for any thought of overconsumption bsky.app/profile/fain...
Personally, I'd rather just check a large bag for a long trip, than have to deal with randomly shipping stuff home and buying entirely new things at unpredictable intervals

(speaking as someone who spends a lot of time traveling internationally for extended periods myself)

A 1944 3 rib cap, flat bottom Esterbrook. I picked this fountain pen up at an antique store, in relatively good condition. My students definitely don’t know but they are getting their physics notes from an 81 year old. 🤣 #fountainpen #fountainpenrestoration #esterbrook

It’s the end of an era! We have said goodbye to our venerable 10 year old xyz printer and we welcome a Bambu P1s to the studio. And after 10 years of 3D printing our own models, parts and designs we have finally printed a Benchy for the first time. 🤣 @bsympson.bsky.social #3dprinting

Trying a new (for me) higher Ed assessment practice: zero point assignments. Assignments of the sort that it will be difficult to pass the class if they are not done. No points so no cheating incentive but completing them good faith will most likely improve summative assessment results.

A more robust yet slimmer profile for the Witch’s Wand. This pen features a modern housing that should accept any standard dip pen nib. It currently has a vintage USA made Hunt Globe Bowl Point 513 EF #fountainpen #dippen #broommaking

Witch’s Wand. I made some changes to the construction and am enjoying this new version. It will accept any reasonably standard dip pen nib, vintage or modern. And like all my brooms, it swept up the mess of its own making, entering the world with positive impact. #dippen #fountainpen #broommaking

1/4 This Welsh combo fountain pen is unusual for a couple of reasons. First, while early celluloid Welsh combos are commonplace, later post war lucite ones are not. In fact, I haven't seen another one and I wasn't aware that this one was a combo until I unwrapped it! #fountainpen #cats

A handmade hardened leather desk tray. Perfect for small things that need wrangling. Black with a coelacanth lurking in the depths. Shown with a large, vintage blue and white celluloid Ambassador fountain pen. (If anyone is looking to part with the red and white version, let me know!)

This is your casual (but serious) reminder that everything I make or do is supervised closely by at least one cat. And you should take that into consideration if you would like to own something I have made.

An Ingersoll Dollar Pen. I picked up a cheap lot with several variations of this fountain pen, no nibs. It turns out the pens I got were in VERY good condition. #fountainpen #fountainpenrestoration #ingersolldollarpen
