Specifically, I'm looking at buying some free-standing barriers for use in a busy trade hall, to permit a quieter space for demo games.

Played The King Is Dead, an accidental Christmas gift, today. It is a simple, strategic game that I have definitely not yet mastered or even fully understood. Very hard to predict the consequences of ones own actions! I'm looking forward to playing more.

If we only get one, I think it needs to be used to establish early on how Gandalf feels about a certain character.

The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

Right, I'm reading the Lost Mine of Phandelver (starter set) now.
Some good simple GM advice in here, even if it is still very "you the DM are the fount of everything and have ultimate authority".
I know, that's how D&D works - but you can actually run it in a less autocratic way.

Just having a little read of the D&D starter set rules. It's funny the hoops we jump through to try and make a high number be good. You've got stats from 3-18, you've got a d20, the mechanic should be obvious. But no - you have stat modifiers, because a high roll needs to be good.

Supposing for a moment that I want to run the current edition of D&D - I may not, but supposing - is that 5e, or the 2024 version? What's the diff?
And, should I get the starter set, or just dive right in with the full fat game?

I can do it, but let's just say it's been a while.
What's a good published adventure to run for them? Should I make something up myself? Or, insist they play some cool indie game instead?
