I am increasingly distressed by academia's uncritical adoption of what are marketed as AI tools, as it is increasingly clear how many of the adopters (both individuals and uni reps purchasing services) have no idea what they're actually buying.

Anyone who has studied the history of the 1930’s is incredibly uncomfortable right now.
It’s like all the pseudoscience, authoritarianism, and concentrated power is being completely recapitulated.
The 1930’s were a lesson in what not to do, right after a global pandemic.

The tech bro fascination with eugenics is so on brand. The idea that you could make accurate, actionable predictions from individual genotypes (with all their complex, non-linear interactions) from averaged, linearly modeled population-level genomic statistics is just another big data fantasy

Human Rights Watch HRW analyzed 184 Israeli evacuation orders in Gaza, finding they were often inaccurate and too late, sowing confusion & panic. Designated evacuation routes & so-called safe zones were consistently & repeatedly bombed. There is no safe zone in Gaza.
