The SLS rocket for Artemis II is set to roll to LC-39B in less then 2 weeks! At the pad, NASA will be performing a series of tests, after which they'll directly move into launch operations without returning to the VAB. The window for Artemis II opens NET Feb. 7th at ~02:45 UTC.

We're celebrating the #NewYear with this stunning sight from the International Space Station: a giant blue jet and red sprites shooting upwards from a thunderstorm.

As she flew 400 km above Earth, NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers caught a gigantic spark with blue flashes and red tentacles shooting upwards. In the image, a blue jet propagates into space towards the upper layers of the atmosphere. The beam of light is followed by red flashes spreading like tentacles across the sky. The magnificent event lasted less than a second.

"Sudarsky Class II" planets, the water cloud gas giants, are commonly depicted as white or light blue planets. I decided to depict our very own Jupiter under the same logic.

A depiction of Jupiter if it ran under the same logic as the white/light blue depictions of gas giants with water clouds. The planet is depicted as a light blue planet, with white zones and light blue belts. The moon Europa can be seen near it. Photochemical hazes are a ubiquitous feature on giant planets. Some gases in their atmospheres, like methane and ammonia, are broken down by sunlight ('photo') and recombine to form haze molecules. This process is known to occur on all four giant planets, as well as Titan, Triton, and Pluto, while simulations predict intense haze formation on Sudarsky Class III planets as well. As such, the water cloud giant planets would likely also have haze, and hence be tinted brownish, as well.

History of Venus

Young Venus probably received too much sunlight for water to ever condense on its surface; instead the water stayed in the atmosphere, gradually lost, until Venus desiccated and became the dry, hot world we know today.

The picture depicts the history of Venus as I understand it. The planet initially started out with a magma ocean, not unlike Earth. When this magma ocean cooled, water began to be outgassed. Unlike Earth however, this water failed to condense out of the atmosphere; instead it remained in the air, making the atmosphere water-rich. Atmospheric water vapour absorbs red light, causing the planet to turn blue, and suppresses cloud formation on dayside. Over time, water was lost, one way or another. This eventually dried Venus up, resulting in the planet we know of today: one with carbon dioxide and nitrogen rich atmosphere maintaining a hot, dry surface, and shrouded by clouds of water and sulfuric acid. The image features a brief "poem" which writes "Where rain ever fell, Tell tales never told, Bold unchanging lands".
