This man is going viral for showing up to an Anti-ICE protest in NJ. People thought he was there to cause trouble. They were wrong.

He’s never protested before. He came because he saw kids running from ICE on the news and couldn’t sit at home. This is the best of America.

I’m so concerned about the monuments of now late and slain civil rights activists. It takes a tremendous amount of work to get them planned, agreed upon, constructed and cared for. DT is playing to his lowest base with this revisionist history. An insult to late activists and their survivors.

Viola Liuzzo was killed by the Klan in 1965. She was a worker in the civil rights movement. Read about her here before Trump and his racist staff remove it from the Web site.

And that’s why her story matters. Because courage isn’t about comfort, it’s about conviction. It’s about standing up when it’s easier to look away.”

Sister Sunday: Viola Liuzzo

“Viola Liuzzo became the only white woman killed during the Civil Rights Movement. A mother who laid her life on the line for freedom she could have ignored.

Educating people to slain and abused white activists proves that white America was aware of racism, but either agreed or didn’t care.. at least not enough to get involved. Besides, the maimed and murdered didn’t set out for recognition, let alone be considered martyrs. Simply acting on conscience.

To an extent this is true. But we have to ask how come many people have not heard about John Brown? Viola Liuzzo?

As a white person, I'd rather focus on the POC who made a difference. Avoids the whole dumb white savior routine that the white media loves so much.

This is the 1st time I’ve ever heard the name Viola Liuzzo, which is nuts not just b/c I teach history, but also b/c I’m pretty sure she’s a paisan.

She was a white civil rights activist who was killed by the KKK. J. Edgar Hoover smeared her b/c there was an FBI informant in the KKK group. Unreal.
I remember saying "well, one good thing out of the Alex Pretti shooting is he very well my be our Viola Liuzzo" and not one person on my entire block had any idea wtf I was talking about
Columbia cancelled my 2024 class on Race and Media, so I decided to teach it independently anyway.

I made a conscious decision to include whiteness in discussions about race.

What we learned is how much white people have been kept in the dark about white martyrs for civil rights.

Just keep swimming.
We are going to win.

I don’t know who Viola Liuzzo was either until I searched her name after seeing this post, so thank you for that. Most of what I learned about the civil rights movement was not taught in school.

The stories of white activists, who were aware of peril, but fully expected to return home, do not have to eclipse 400 years of racist atrocities. These murders and abuse inflicted upon young freedom riders, should be taught to contrast the ratio and to prove white America *knew* what was going on.

This is a tension Tim Wise and I discussed in my class last semester. I personally have counter-intuitive opinions-- in the sense that white people do need to learn these historical figures in the first place.

Without drowning out the direct victims of racial violence. Much to discuss!
