In any dictatorship, writers are among the first to be imprisoned, and vocabulary is quickly diminished and language deteriorates. Writers, if their vocabulary is not leashed, are quick to see injustice, and rouse the people to do something about it. 1/2

The US Dept. of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has dismissed 11 complaints and six allegations related to book bans, saying it was ending "Biden’s book ban hoax."

PEN America counted over 10,000 instances of school book bans in the 2023-24 school year, nearly 3X the number in the previous year.

It's Thanksgiving week in the United States, which means capitalism! We're skipping (mainly) the talk of the midnight electronics runs, and heading straight to Small Business Saturday, when your local independent bookseller is doing their very best to put great books in your hands.

I'm going to close my survey at the end of this year (which I can't believe is in two weeks! Yikes!), but I wanted to thank everyone in this community. I've posted this to all my social media channels, but bluesky has been the most supportive. Thank you! #Romancelandia

I don't know if I'll manage to read 23 new books by BIPOC authors before the end of the year, but I'll try to amplify as many as I can. #23For23 I'll start by recommending "Snowbound in Her Boss's Bed" by Marcella Bell, which is about a Black Jewish woman. I really enjoyed it!

Late night post for #readers

Do you currently reread books? (Did you used to, but not any more?) when it comes to books you reread, do you have a type? Is there a difference between books you reread once and books you reread over and over?

"In many genres, a key source of the stories’ power and relevance—the very element that enables them to do their work—is the formula." This is such a good piece on genre storytelling and its affordances.

The Journal of Popular Romance Studies now has a page on Wikipedia--and I have to say, we look pretty spiffy there! One small edit I'm going to suggest: we are indeed often referred to by our initials (JPRS), but if you're in the know, you say it aloud as "Jeepers."
