North British Station Hotel Edinburgh 31st December 1941 menu (the hotel is still there, now The Balmoral) .. includes a 'savoury' course, wartime notwithstanding.
Occasionally the Facebook algorithm still throws up something interesting. What I am surprised at here is less the availability of a six-course meal on a wartime dining car express, and more the appearance of Welsh rarebit as a course you would enjoy between cakes and coffee.

we should eat way more deer, too many of them around causing huge damage to woodland. They're a disaster without top level predation (the Epping Forest visitors centre has a freezer selling it from their herd, incredibly ethical meat, yet people keep complaining because Bambi or something)

Electric car discounts are too meagre to help the low-paid and car-dependent.

"The mission of the US Digital Service was to deliver better government services to the American people through technology and design.. For the US Digital Service, the tech was a *vehicle* to fix outdated policies, procurement and hiring issues, convoluted business processes. " This is foundational.
"Technology has become the spinal cord of government. ... Just look at DOGE's approach. When they began cutting across the government, where did they go first? Not to policy offices, not to secretary suites, not to planning departments. They went directly to the levers of IT systems and operations."
Revisiting the Origins of Civic Tech
In an era of DOGE, what can we learn from a different approach to tech and government

This is multiple threads about characteristic and caricature Scottish food items ..
I usually blupp about Edinburgh history but occasionally like to foray into the realm of Scottish cuisine.
Today's topic is that quintessential bakery teatime treat, the "Empire Biscuit".
🍪 We may have a vague inkling of its origins as the "German Biscuit", but shall we get a bit more specific?

There's a lot of misinformation about NATO floating about. I took the opportunity to throw together a pie chart based on NATO's own data found at www.nato.int/cps/em/natoh.... The US share is substantial, but it is by no means the majority of the contribution.
