Homelessness, housing, and health policy at CBPP. MSW/JD. Kansan. Thoughts/posts are my own.
Nobody should have to choose between paying rent or buying food in the wealthiest nation in the world, but that's a reality for many families. Delays and reductions #SNAP will make that worse. The Administration should go further and fully fund November #SNAP assistance.
It is a relief that the Administration is finally agreeing to do the bare minimum and follow the law by using the #SNAP contingency reserve to partially fund November SNAP benefits & nutrition assistance in Puerto Rico & American Samoa.

If the Administration follows through with its current plan to let SNAP run out of funding, many affected families will have to choose between paying rent or putting food on the table, putting them at greater risk of #eviction and #homelessness.

We all want to live in communities where all our neighbors have a safe place to call home and are treated with dignity. But yesterday, Pres. Trump issued an executive order that will worsen #homelessness and punish people simply for being poor and unhoused. This is wrong.

Everyone one needs and deserves a safe place to sleep. But one year ago tomorrow, #SCOTUS decided in #JohnsonvGrantsPass that cities/states can fine or arrest unhoused people for sleeping outside even if they have nowhere safe to go.

Household budgets are tight. Cutting #Medicaid & #SNAP will put households already facing unaffordable rents at greater risk of losing their housing & undermine efforts to address #homelessness. We need to make housing & other essentials more affordable, not less!

You can’t cut hundreds of billions from #Medicaid without harming people. New CBO analysis confirms proposals House Republican have floated would leave millions uninsured, each slashing billions from Medicaid w/ $170b-$472B in cuts coming from lower enrollment . www.cbo.gov/system/files...

President Trumps's new budget reflects yet another effort to misrepresent programs that help support the most structurally marginalized members of our community as “woke.” www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/u...

🧵We all want to live in communities where no one is forced to sleep outside, in a car, or in shelters. The President’s budget would force MORE people into #homelessness.

🧵Last week, @HUDgov and @DHSgov announced an alarming interagency Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed to scapegoat and scare people who are immigrants instead of taking steps to ensure that everyone has access to a stable, affordable home. www.kuow.org/stories/hud-...
HUD will share data with Homeland Security to target immigrants without legal status
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says it is partnering with Homeland Security to help identify immigrants without legal status living in publicly subsidized housing.

🧵Every U.S. community–including our capital–should have #AffordableHousing for everyone who lives in it. Instead of pursuing solutions we know help people find and keep #housing, Pres. Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) last week that will make #homelessness worse in D.C.

The House may vote as soon as tomorrow on a federal government funding bill that contains a hidden, devastating surprise for the District of Columbia: a requirement that DC drastically slash its budget halfway through the fiscal yr, causing immediate cuts to police, schools, transportation & more.

House Republican budget could impact millions: 36M+ may lose Medicaid, 40M+ could see reduced food aid through SNAP, and student loan costs may rise for millions of borrowers—offsetting the cost of extending expiring 2017 tax cuts for high-income people. www.cbpp.org/press/statem...

Team, we’re losing the plot. Their plan to cut people’s health care & food assistance is about paying for tax cuts for rich, not deficit reduction:

Everyone facing #homelessness should have quick access to safe, dignified shelter and permanent housing no matter their gender. HUD issued a transphobic statement that it will stop enforcing anti-discrimination protections for transgender and nonbinary people.

With House Republicans still negotiating a budget plan that is likely to include deeply harmful proposals, Senate Republicans today released a much narrower plan, which is both opaque and troubling.

Housing is a basic human need. Policymakers should embrace evidence-based solutions to #homelessness. Instead, HUD Sec. Scott Turner rebuked proven strategies & refused to condemn inhumane, ineffective policies punishing #unhoused people w/ nowhere else to go during confirmation process.
