Two summers ago I crossed paths with a boat called the Phyllis May on the Thames. Once I’d moored up I jumped on my bike and caught up with it downriver, and had a chat with the owners at the lock. By coincidence I was reading Narrow Dog at the time. It wasn’t the same boat, but a replacement after…
Narrowdog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington. This has personal resonance with me because I have cycled/sailed a lot of the waterways he talks about, including the Channel (tho not on my own narrowboat - are you mad?)

Took 3 attempts to read but loved it. Unusual style of writing. Wonderful poetry.

I'm currently in Glasgow where the poetry and romance of Scotland has caught me. Can't help but reminisce about past trips.
I started writing a book in 2021 and have never finished it. Perhaps one day I will. In the meantime, I'm publishing the chapters (the finished ones) on my website.

Here's the next one: the story of when I cycled the Three Peaks with my brother-in-law.

Book #6: Lessons in Chemistry, pictured where I finished it: on the train home from Malaga.

Really fun, once I got over the outrageous tragedy the author subjects our heroine to near the start! I enjoyed it so much I read the ending multiple times and thought of little else for days afterwards.

Just been catching the last gasp of summer with a trip (by rail of course) to Malaga. I thought I’d said goodbye to my summer clothes but it was 30 degrees in Malaga! The best part of rail travel is that this was also a holiday in Barcelona, Madrid and Girona 🇪🇸

We will also be holding an event in Bristol, the following week: Thursday 6th November. Me, Lorenzo and Mark will be sharing the story of our LEJOG ride in memory of @timcyclesthecoast.bsky.social, and we'll also be joined by someone from Sustrans. Everyone welcome 💙 fb.me/e/3zPGGTfPA

Book no.5: Zero Altitude by Helen Coffey. I started it ages ago and finally read to the heart-warming end. This one’s a personal one for me: a travel writer I persuaded to quit flying with the @flightfreeuk.bsky.social challenge. Fabulous read from a wonderful travel writer - quite proud really.

It's on 29th October at Edinburgh Quaker Meeting House at 6.45pm. If you live in Edinburgh or nearby, please come along and please share widely.

While it's heartbreaking to have said goodbye to Tim, we want to continue his legacy as best as possible, by sharing stories of cycling and mental health.
Looking forward to being back in Edinburgh at the end of the month to share the story of our Ride for Tim. We're also hearing from @nicklifeafloat.bsky.social and the charity Health in Mind.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who makes a NY resolution to read more. Failing miserably at the one-per-month aim - only four so far! But I have quite a few half-started, so I could still make it…
Fourth book so far this year: Still Life by Sarah Winman. After a slow start I was absolutely captivated by the story and the writing. Makes me want to go to Florence at once! (by train of course).

I didn't realise, it's #WorldMentalHealthDay.

Tim was an absolute top bloke. Wise, funny, clever, passionate, and a bit silly. He was also extremely open and honest about his struggles. His story resonated with so many people. It's so important to speak about mental health, if only to help others.
On 29th October we're holding an event in Edinburgh about the Ride for Tim. There will also be talks from mental health charity Health in Mind, and Nick Ray @lifeafloat.bsky.social. All details here – all welcome 💙 fb.me/e/6IrqxMFSX

And if you're in Bristol, we'll be there the following week, 6th November.

The events are a chance to celebrate Tim and cycling, and reflect on the challenges of living with Bipolar disorder. Please come if you can 🙏

It was #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2025 on Wednesday and I was thinking about Tim all day. If he were still here, Tim would surely have posted something honest and inspiring. I wanted to do the same but it's not so easy when your friend has gone. So instead here's just a lovely memory.
Reflecting on what has been a pretty crazy year. As well as the Georgia trip for work, I also was very fortunate to spend the summer cycling round Morocco. My ride started and finished in Tangier, and took in the Atlas mountains, the Sahara Desert, and the Atlantic coast amongst many other places 🇲🇦❤️

Reflections on the ride:

"It’s hard coming off an adventure. For so long you’ve had a purpose, and when that purpose is over, it’s easy to think, now what? I wonder if that’s what overwhelmed Tim in the end: his adventures were his therapy... timcyclesthecoast.com/2025/08/24/d...

We’ve been craving a Sunday roast for the past three weeks, so now I’m back home here it is. And in honour of Tim there’s a full roast garlic bulb in there 🧄

(This is what vegans eat for Sunday roast: all the trimmings, plus a carrot and cashew nut roast)
