the original Phyllis May had been lost in a fire. Terry Darlington no longer owned it, but I had a lovely chat with the new owners.

Having now (finally) got to the end of the book, I’ve found out that Terry died just a few days ago.

It’s an unusual read, and a bit hard work, but really beautiful.

Narrowdog to Carcassonne by Terry Darlington. This has personal resonance with me because I have cycled/sailed a lot of the waterways he talks about, including the Channel (tho not on my own narrowboat - are you mad?)

Took 3 attempts to read but loved it. Unusual style of writing. Wonderful poetry.

six miles and at the end James turns to me and says, I understand now why you promised so much from that road."

And then there it is, the crest, that view, and the descent is extreme, the road straight and rapid, and there are uphills but the downs are enough to push you over each one, and it undulates and goes down and flows and rollercoasters and the pedals need only the lightest of touches for a full

I'm really proud of this writing, and this is one of my favourite chapters. My challenge was, how do you tell a 7-day story without getting bogged down with the details, but that still tells the full story? I hope I did a good job.

One short excerpt:

Book #6: Lessons in Chemistry, pictured where I finished it: on the train home from Malaga.

Really fun, once I got over the outrageous tragedy the author subjects our heroine to near the start! I enjoyed it so much I read the ending multiple times and thought of little else for days afterwards.

Four trains took us from London to Malaga, with overnight stops in Barcelona and Madrid on the way out, and Girona on the way back. Lon-Paris-Barcelona = 11 hrs, Barc-Malaga = 6.5 hrs. A fabulous way to travel: comfy, great views and much lower carbon than flying #TrainsNotPlanes

Oh wow! Bet that’s a good read too. Enjoy Zero Altitude!

Bam, finished another one! This has been half-read for ages, for no other reason than just busy. So I finally read to the heart-warming end. This one’s a personal one for me: a travel writer I persuaded to quit flying with the @flightfreeuk.bsky.social challenge. Fabulous read - quite proud really.
