1835 saw the first attempt led assassination of a US President.

A man named Richard Lawrence, a house painter shot at 7th President Andrew Jackson’s back. He misfired. His second pistol then misfired.
Jackson noticed the attempt and then beat Lawrence half to death with his cane.

In 1979,the first modern era school shooting took place at the Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California.

Unusual even now, the perpetrator was a 16 year old girl who killed 2 and injured 8 at the school across the street from her home.

The shuttle broke apart 73 seconds into its flight killing all 7 crew aboard, including a teacher.

Big Bird was supposed to be onboard the Challenger but virtue of being 8’2” it was possible to get him to fit.

In 1929, a series by engineer & cartoonist Rube Goldberg was first published in Collier’s Weekly.

Entitled “The Inventions of Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts A.K.” the cartoons comically intricate, pointless machines with labeled schematics made The Rube Goldberg Machine famous.

Today in 1890, journalist Nellie Bly ( real name, Elizabeth Cochran Seaman )successfully completed the task after just 72 days.

In 1935 the first beer sold in a can appeared.
In Richmond Virgina, Kruger’s Cream Ale and Kruger’s Finest Beer were delivered to faithful Kruger drinkers, some 2,000 cans in total, barely 18 months after the end of prohibition.

The brewing world eventually followed suit.

Ozzy claims he thought it was rubber and bit its head off.

They were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen, the first photograph taken was of his wife’s hand showing the bones and wedding ring

Thimble Theater comic strip started in the New York Journal in late 1919. The strip had daily jokes with lead characters Ham Gravy Olive Oyl.

They had lots of one shot characters,
some became regulars.

Then today in 1929, a sailor called Popeye was introduced and the rest is history.

1749, the New Haymarket Theatre, London was to host a conjuror who would “place his entire body in an empty wine bottle on stage” and other ridiculous sounding tricks.

When he failed to show at the obvious hoax performance, the crowd rioted and gutted the theatre.

In 1919, a storage tank containing 2.3 million gallons (US) of Molasses, weighing approximately 12,000 metric tons, burst in the North End neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

The 35mph wave rushed the streets killing 25 people and injuring 150.

The live recording, from 2 performances was released as his first live album.

The live version of his 1955 song Folsom Prison Blues went to #1 on the Billboard Country Hot 100 in 1968
