Trump is ordering the military to use “full force” against an American city, while the Supreme Court declares him the Sun King and Congress hides under a pile of coats.

The checks and balances only work when the institutions aren’t run by utter cowards and the complicit

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.
Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

From Sotomayor's dissent, which she's now reading from the bench:

"The President has made a 'solemn mockery' of our Constitution. Rather than stand firm, the Court gives way. Because such complicity should know no place in our system of law, I dissent." www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

Just in: The @aclutn.bsky.social has filed a lawsuit on behalf of seven Metro Nashville councilmembers challenging a new state law that would criminalize public officials who vote on policies supporting immigrants, including sanctuary cities -- which are prohibited in Tennessee.

Please read! The only way to stop the continued assault on trans lives is to understand exactly how we got here.
The response to Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding Tennessee’s law barring transgender minors from obtaining gender-affirming medical care has been muted at best.

At Law Dork, a look at how we actually got here.
Where is the outrage over Skrmetti?
On the far right's campaign to create uncertainty. And the powerful institutions that helped along the way.

my take is that your willingness to accept this gulf of america nonsense is an indicator of your willingness to accept much worse things coming from this administrator
Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico may be upsetting to some, writes @giladedelman.bsky.social, but “in a democracy, values are determined by majority rule, and they don’t shift in only one direction. They can shift back”:
‘The Gulf of America’ Is the Wrong Fight to Pick
The more that politicians mess around with place names, the more important it is to respond according to consistent principles.

SHARE WIDELY.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights.

You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one.

I wouldn’t exactly call it “joyful,” but this @lilianasegura.bsky.social piece on the death row reaction to Biden’s commutations is about as close to Christmas cheer as death penalty reporting gets.

Joe Biden’s commutations for 37 of 40 people on federal death row brought relief for those who feared another killing spree by Donald Trump.
