Lived and worked in Europe & Asia and could still be if I wanted to, so I'm here by choice.
Retired. Spending my time going to the opera and exhibits of Impressionist painters. Manet is the man. And of course, there's Hopper.

This painting by Valentin Serov in 1905 is becoming relevant to us 120 years later.
Its title is "Soldiers, Brave Lads, Where Is Your Glory Gone?"
He witnessed "Bloody Sunday" January 9 1905 when cavalry attacked and massacred peaceful protesters. He painted and titled it in response.
Et tu, Trump?

Trump is now claiming the power to override actual laws enacted by congress. Smells suspiciously like the 1933 Enabling Act that cemented total Nazi control over Germany

It may be no exaggeration to say that by their charge at Little Round Top, at Gettysburg on this day in 1863, Chamberlain and his 20th Maine saved our Republic.

I don't usually count David Brooks as one of my favorite reads. His point, in the last sentence below is the best thing I've read so far this month. "𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴."

This is how autocracy melds into fascism: contort rights into "privileges" that can be withheld or withdrawn unless we comply with other demands. The next step is to turn all rights into privileges that we exercise, or not, at the leader's discretion.
