The ability to actually be funny at a time like this is impressive 🤣
Walz: I think Kristi Noem probably should go back to South Dakota, not have any dogs, and just kind of ride things out

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

Voting NO on the DHS funding bill is the bare minimum.

Backing Kristi Noem’s impeachment is the bare minimum.

Holding law-breaking ICE agents legally accountable is the bare minimum.

ICE is beyond reform. Abolish it.

The execution of Alex Pretti is playing so badly because you can look at his actions and life story - his last act was helping, boy scout, athlete, health care worker to veterans - and compare those to the men who killed him and know which you would want to be your son, brother, father, uncle.

Senator _____: I’ll keep calling every day until you stand up against authoritarianism. This is your opportunity to be on the right side of history; when your grandchildren’s grandchildren ask about their illustrious ancestor in Congress back when America was still a democracy, will they be PROUD?

I was silent a few days after—like you—witnessing the execution in real time of a US citizen. Not a video game. Not a scene from a dystopian film. An actual murder of a man who dedicated his life to helping vets in a notoriously thankless job. I feel SHAME today. And like you, I’m shell shocked.

This is my favorite Night Hawk number so far! Don’t miss the audio recording of Matthew Warner Osborn breathing modern life into this 200-year-old ancestor of Batman in the latest Substack! ➡️➡️

Let’s go!
In the words of John Lewis, it's time for "good trouble."

If you're a Minnesotan, I urge you to join tomorrow's Ice Out For Good economic blockout and exercise your collective power.

And if you're not, organize in solidarity and demand our leaders stand up to ICE. https://iceoutforgood.org/

When a movie like Herzog’s Nosferatu (1979) feels like a vacation from the world, things might be rather grim😆, ps I loved it.

Baby’s first Substack is up:

I was forbidden from playing “my music” loudly even in my room because my father complained that he was “composing music” and being able to hear anything else distracted him. Back then, this always struck me as a bit phony…

Usually January takes me OUT mentally and I’ve been trying to figure out why this year is different, especially given what a krumkake the world is right now.
I finally realized it is because I rejoined CHOIR.
You guys, I have been SO much happier! It has made my seasonal “sads” way more manageable

The murder of Renee Good by ICE is an atrocity that must face justice. Thankfully, accurate and clear video footage shows that this was a cold-blooded murder. This iteration of the print pays homage to that.

Matthew Warner Osborn @nighthawkog.bsky.social discovered the Night Hawk, 1820s progenitor of Batman, in the archives of America’s first socialist newspaper; now he’s sharing weekly installments on Substack as we count down to his @uchicagopress.bsky.social pub date for his book of the same name!
