Would UK HE be better able to defend itself against charges of irrelevance if its senior management hadn't spent the last decade pushing the narrative that a university is nothing more than an overpriced skills training facility with some modest probability of an income premium?

Greta Thunberg: “Israeli soldiers hit, kicked, starved, and tortured me”

• They placed a flag next to me, and anytime the flag touched me, they kicked me
• Whenever I raised my head to look at Ben-Gvir, I was kicked
• She was filmed while stripped naked

Great news on a Sunday(+a journal with a 5% acceptance rate! @efpraxiaz.bsky.social and I analysed the EU AI Act via Critical Discourse Analysis. While it initially emphasises human rights, it then constructs migrants+refugees as threats, justifying surveillance tech (and even polygraphs?)

Just received my co-produced and translated research materials (participant information sheet and consent form) in Urdu and Arabic! 😃 We’ll also have interpretation during interviews as we try to make the study more inclusive.

When I went to OpenAI’s press briefing a couple weeks ago, the moment that made me the most nauseous is when their “VP of Global Impact” said they were testing AI models like this across Kenya and other parts of Africa
“The AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, ‘leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”
AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study
Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.

It’s always Southern Europe paying the price for the Global North’s/Northern Europe’s, pollution, imperialism, and austerity
Southern Europe is sweltering under life-threatening heat that could last through Monday, fueling wildfires that have left at least two people dead. In Spain, soldiers have been deployed to battle the fires and hundreds of people have evacuated. nyti.ms/46STog7

Not to flex, but I designed an entire study (co produced with PPIE panels and individuals from diverse backgrounds) navigated both the famously challenging NHS and university ethics processes (half the time I had no idea what I was doing)+today I got provisional acceptance🥳

I’ll be presenting two studies at the @qmip.bsky.social Conference 2025, both examining how digitalisation policies advance neoliberal agendas and deepen structural inequalities—one via Critical Discourse Analysis, the other via constructionist Thematic Analysis.
