Moved here from Twitter. Still resisting.

Text adventure author. Purdue sports fan. Former GameFAQs guide writer. Reads too much. Plays too much chess. No crypto, MAGA, or DMs from ppl I don't know outside here.

One apolitical rule I've learned to live by:

Online or in real life, I picture if someone I just met can speak the phrase "I'm interested in what you have to say" in a normal tone of voice. If they can, that's a great sign. If not, uh-oh. I hope to give the same thing back.

Still processing the passing of Daniel Naroditsky, 29, American chess grandmaster. He was smart and funny and I learned so much from him, whether he was commentating on PogChamps or the FIDE World Team Championships. I thought I would have many years to learn even more. RIP.

It sucks, on other sites, ppl you have neat stuff in common w/ & thought "no way they're MAGA" turning out to be MAGA.

But surprisingly a simple "I'm sorry you share these views" has actually pushed me into doing something I meant to.

I thought it'd be a lot tougher or complex to break away.

archive.org has let me re-read some favorite Choose Your Own Adventures from my youth. One favorite that held up well: Outlaws of Sherwood Forest by @ellenkushner.bsky.social. Time travel, summer camp to 12th century AD. She's done bigger & better work since then, but daily act of gratitude etc. 1/2

Moving to BlueSky from Twitter has been weird. It's reminded me of being free of some people I disliked.

Or was I necessarily?

I still catch myself going back to twitter, hearing that voice saying "but bluesky is just a huge validation circle."

(1/2 good response I hope in next post)

I have followbacks to catch up on but I am too lazy to vet. (There is a nice pile but not that money.) So in the meantime, enjoy (I guess) this topical and not-too-forced palindrome:

Hey! Car, cots, I: kakistocracy. Eh?

I've noticed a few posts at DailyKos saying "I'd like to come over to bluesky" so if I sent you a follow today (11/13 noon central) that's probably why.

Woke up to 25 alerts in my notifications. This is probably unsustainable -- but it struck me.

I'd need to buck myself up for potential trolls over there. Here, I felt buoyed enough to go get stuff done.

So, yes, good morning all, both new follows and old, from here and there...

Not that I have a huge following, but I will be coming back to this. So I'll try to amplify it.
Welcome to everyone new to Bluesky! Here are 4 (illustrated) steps you can take to make your experience here more pleasant than what you left behind on X and/or Threads. A 🧵

My first quote post, for one of the reasons I still stayed on twitter, who made their way over here. Yay!

So I just reported my first spammer here, who posted nonsensical "greetings."

On the one hand, it's good to feel useful. On the other hand, I hope it doesn't become too common an occurrence.

I'm hoping the moderation team does better than That Other Place.
