The homogenisation and consolidation of buisinesses and brands has led to the erosion of the midlist, the indie movie or band or comic. There's a real sense of "I'll only try media that's already popular / famous," and I'm begging you to look for the weird shit, the experimental, the niche.

All of this. ALL OF IT. Part of the reason I read 90-95% indie is because so much of what is trad published is the same. Formulaic, predictable, and published because it will make money, not because of its own inherent value as expression or craft or art.

Why do indie authors often only sell on Amazon? Same title cost to the reader for paperback. Ingram Sparks paid 0.89. Amazon paid 3.21 for the same book. Why — IS requires you to allow a discount to stores to put it on their shelf/site. Minimum is 35%+ depending on region.
