The Royal Hotel in #Portree was gutted by a devastating fire on this day in 1963. #Skye fire crews were joined by those from Kyle and Inverness as gale force winds threatened to spread the fire to shops and a nearby fuel store. Photo is from 1950

A large crowd in #Cromarty on this day in 1914 to watch the beginning of construction of the Dingwall & Cromarty Light Railway. The line was intended to be 18 miles long and connect with the Highland Railway at Conon. Building was halted at the outbreak of WWI and never resumed

The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, 'Pioneer', approaching Armadale, #Skye, early 1980s. Launched in 1974, she remained in the CalMac fleet until 2004 and was on the Mallaig - Armadale run from 1979 to 1989 (returning briefly in the early 2000s)

On this day in 1989, torrential rain, combined with melting snow, caused the River Ness to rise by several feet. The force of the fast-flowing, debris-laden water undermined the foundations of the piers of the Ness Viaduct resulting in its collapse.

Quendale House, also known as Quendale Haa, #Shetland was built around 1800 and was the home of the Grierson family who owned the Quendale Estate. The water mill was built in 1867 and processed grain. Milling ceased in 1948 but the building has been restored
