Zebra mussel invasion can elevate mercury concentrations in fish by 1) altering fish foraging patterns, and 2) promoting microbial communities capable of methylating inorganic mercury.

Fish tissue Hg is 72%–157% higher in lakes with zebra mussels. #bioinvasions

Nature cannot be studied solely through desk work. Field knowledge is indispensable for ensuring that research and environmental management remain grounded in the reality of the natural world.

Extinction of experience among ecologists
Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology are under multiple threats and are progressively declining. We call for greater attention to this ongoing loss of direct field experience within the ecology community, as it could have widespread consequences for science and education, ultimately hindering efforts to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis.
