Discussed Roman autocracy at Kennedy Center last night with @petridishes.bsky.social Eg on how ancient autocrats depended on collaboration as much as violence, on autocratic corruption of language & gave shout out to Roman sarcophagus where one US president refused to be buried. tinyurl.com/4m9vkuwv

NEWS: C20 is leading efforts to save Bath Fire Station from proposed demolition.

The 1930s classical Art Deco building was a rare pre-war project by a female architect, and went on to play a crucial role in protecting the city during the Baedeker Blitz of 1942.

I had the best day today, surveying the structure and dials on the stables tower while Peter of The Cumbria Clock Company dismantled the motionworks & clock movement for overhaul. The clock was originally installed by London Clockmaker Langley Bradley in 1725.

New ancient DNA research suggest that Iron Age communities were matrilocal: women stayed put while men moved away to marry… 1/2

I supported this protest and am completely delighted that the new UK government will not be going ahead with plans to destroy paper wills and records. They’re the lifeblood of historical research.
Thanks to the 1,600 people and organisations who responded to the UK Ministry of Justice’s proposals on the retention of wills. Good news: The UK Government has determined not to proceed with any reforms that involve the destruction of original wills

In the light of all the announcements & shenanigans going on elsewhere, decided this is really the only place to be.
In other news I had to escape to my car when it started to snow today during a sort of "watching brief". I have quite a high tolerance for the cold but 8 hours outside was too long

A bit more serious on the Substack this time. A small bomb exploded in the heart of Greenwich Park 130 years ago. A young Frenchman named Martial Bourdin died. He was only a few feet from his intended destination: a clock. Why did he hate it so much?

Greetings at the start of a new working week. Very pleased to be back in Bath for a bit & also to see the sun after a rather dull and wet (but deliciously fun) weekend in Sussex.
Have an excellent day all

The Christmas Tree has been dressed & is in its usual place next to the regulator by London clockmaker John Shelton (mid 18th century). This year for the first time in some years the clock is running after we completely overhauled the movement & the beautiful high quality mahogany case. Very happy!
