So I've pretty much got unit selection and movement completed in my lil tactical rpg I'm building with Godot

Movement ranges are displaying properly, pathfinding with AstarGrid2D works great, can also cancel a move.

Even coded up a path visualizer!

Now on to unit classes and attacks.
Ran into my first ever race condition bug, only took me 3 days to finally figure it out 😅

If you're code emits a signal before the receiver is ready to await it, the signal gets lost in the void.

Adding a single frame delay before emission can ensure proper setup.

Timing is everything!

Man, troubleshooting my enemy AI logic is tricky!

I've never actually done enemy AI before so I'm trying to take my time with it and fully understand what the heck is going on.

I don't know what the heck is going on 😅

Holy smokes pixel art is a lot harder than I thought it would be!

I usually hand draw most of my game art but I thought I'd give pixel art a go to keep it simple for my first game.

Simple != Easy

When the systems you've been building out separately start interacting and it actually works properly

As a solo dev, I think a game design document isn't completely necessary.

Sure it's handy to write down what you wanna build and plan how you might do that.

But the advantage of being a solo dev is you're a lot more agile. You can experiment as you build and let those creative juices flow!

I've found that writing code with AI, you've gotta be careful.

Don't just blindly write down everything it tells you to, it's not always perfect.

Try to fully understand what the AI is generating and make sure it fits within the context of what you're trying to do and also the bigger picture.

When the brain is feeling fuzzy due to lack of sleep, trying to sift through code is a bit much.

Maybe today should just be an art day

My aim for my first game isn't to release a banger that'll make me millions and let me do this full-time.

It's to prove to myself that I can actually complete and ship something that people want to play.

If I get one single positive review for something I built,

I'll call that a win.

That feeling when you tie story beats together and form something actually cohesive 😎

If I can pull this off my first game might not suck!

...probably

Version control has been such a lifesaver for me recently.

Being able to branch off of a working version to mess around and try to figure things out is just so dang handy!

Try to fix one thing and break ten others...

Classic.

Okay I guess I'll just rewrite my whole codebase.

One step forward, ten steps back. Amiright?!

I might not be the best coder, but I can figure most things out given enough time.

Lately I've been using claude AI to help me with some trickier logic and it's helped immensely!

I'm improving so much faster with the help of AI, but the trick is not to rely on it too much.

I've decided to try and build a little writing habit.

I'd like to get better at putting myself out there and hopefully make friends in the game development scene because none of my real life friends are nerdy enough.

Might be good to start with an introduction and what I'm working on?
