I’m a proud secondary teacher and Head of English, teaching IBDP Language & Literature, Global Politics and TOK. I’m also a PhD candidate at Deakin University researching the affective intensities of critical literacy in the secondary English classroom✨
School is back, and I’ve started off the year using the Question Sort technique I learned in a @trevormackenzie.bsky.social PD in every class. Students write questions on post-its, then categorise the questions, then we discuss. They’re engaged, owning their learning, THINKING, and working together!

I’ve heard people say that AI could help teacher workload issues, but as a HOD, it’s added to my workload because now I spend my time chasing students whose work has been flagged as AI and trying to get to the bottom of what is their work and what isn’t.

Thrilled to report I am no longer existing in the human realm after my post-conference massage blasted me into another dimension ✨✨✨

Dr Ellie Mohammadi Foomani shared her research on co-designing with preservice teachers to help them experience relational and restorative pedagogies. A transformative process leading to joy and authenticity for the researchers and autonomy and self-efficacy for preservice teachers 💞 #AARE2024

Dr Amanda McKay presented her chapter with Dr Stephanie Wescott on teacher guilt in testing regime. A very moving and beautifully theorised analysis of the clash between teacher values and actions in data-centric school cultures. Rip down the data walls! @chalkhands.bsky.social #AARE2024

Rochelle Banks presents her autoethnographic exploration of sexual harassment within educational institutions. The Bro Code: a workplace culture of hypermasculine male privilege - so many absolutely disgusting examples of a toxic environment. A brilliant and moving presentation #AARE2024

This research was so immersive and memorable - sound matters! #AARE2024
Super interesting discussion of the ‘sonically cacophonous’ nature of schools from @leannehigham.bsky.social, Eve Mayes, and Melissa Wolfe #AARE2024

A brilliant presentation from @tanjinashraf.bsky.social - loved the point about the paradox of theory being hard to explain but still making sense! #AARE2024
To round out this session, @tanjinashraf.bsky.social’s fab presentation is giving me a lot of food for thought about methods already! I love coming to sessions like this where my brain is full of things to read and think through #AARE2024

We’re getting all the secret journal business, as Prof Susanne Gannon called it. @stewartriddle.com gives the shameless plug for becoming an AER reviewer because it’ll give us an edge and help us understand our work #AARE2024

Brilliant presentation from @drstephaniewescott.bsky.social on how to get published. Sage advice on writerly identity, being a part of public dialogue, and how: “a good set of papers is a stronger story to tell” rather than some random papers that you’re rushing to get out #AARE2024

Thank you to Dr Ben Zunica for facilitating a supportive Lightning Talk session for ECRs and research students. So many interesting studies! Here’s me telling a room of scholars that my PhD is about ✨vibes✨ #AARE2024

Finally jumped on here! Sharing one of my most recent op eds on Indigenous considerations about AI
AI affects everyone – including Indigenous people. It’s time we have a say in how it’s built
Unless AI developers start involving Indigenous people, their claims about the technology benefiting all of humanity will continue to ring hollow.
