The first objects of the Storr Rock Viking Hoard were found on the shore near the Skye landmark #OTD in 1891. The hoard comprised 108 coins and 23 pieces of hacksilver. It was probably deposited in the mid-10thC by a Scandinavian trader or settler. 📸National Museums Scotland #medievalsky

'The bronze trumpet or carnyx is only the third ever found in Britain, and the most complete example discovered anywhere in the world. Fashioned in the shape of a snarling wild animal, the object would have been mounted on a long mouthpiece high above the heads of warriors'. 1/3

Wanted some fun but unfortunately there wasn't an angle that meant I could get far enough away from the statue of King Alfred to get a good shot. That said, here he with a cone on his head and the usual phot of the moon as usual.

It took 10 years of work to prepare a Viking longship for a trip no longer than a football field. How it got to that spot goes back even further — over a millennium.

Today I start my research trip sailing down the River Seine from Paris to Honfleur (via a few stops) in a reconstruction of the Klåstad cargo ship built in 998. It’s the penultimate stage in the ship’s journey from Rome to London throughout the summer. I’ll post updates as we go #Saga25 #MedievalSky

Burrow Mump
