Diverse Ingredients
Along with the not-quite-right angle of the shot and its near-symmetry - I love the sheer diversity of materials, textures, and light/shadow on display here. Bricks, wiring, steel struts, iron girders, some unknown background material - all feeling well suited to each other in terms of muted colour palette and texture contrasts. Buy Print

More of a colour study I suppose, I find it strangely calming to look at these defocused amorphous daubs of vivid purples and yellow, captured by messing with focus points whilst looking into a warped and distorted mirror at a gallery. Artworks opposite as well as passers by provided a wealth of unique views. Buy Print

Purple Phlox
Here's a vivid splash of colour to kickstart the first Friday in the new month, hopefully you're looking forward to an enjoyable and colourful weekend, where ever you are 😊 I believe this is some sort of Phlox, possibly a Garden Phlox. It's been a while, but I have posted another Phlox photo in the past. Buy Print

Dresden Tunnel
It's funny how often I find myself drawn to a photo but I'm not entirely sure why. This picture was taken in Dresden at Brühlsche Gasse, looking from the Alt-Stadt out towards the Elbe riverside. There's a sense that these extremely characteristic stone bricks have a lot of stories to tell, and the view leads out to a slight incongruity of an ancient medieval bridge juxtaposed with a modern car and a distant ferris wheel. The lady sitting on the curb with her shopping adds a certain life to the scene. Buy Print

The Unlikely Perch
For some reason when I see herons wading through water, or even standing on a riverbank on the hunt for prey, it all seems very natural and not unusually proportioned at all. But as soon as I spotted this heron perched high up on a small tree branch, it suddenly seemed like the most unlikely of designs altogether! This heron was hanging out in Berlin's Tierpark, but unlike most of the other creatures there, it was there by choice. I'm guessing there's plenty of good opportunities for scavenging some food. Something that definitely grabbed your attention, and much delighted the spectators. I'm sure there'll be more carnival activity this year though - it's always a riot of colour! Next Monday I'll have to pick a new theme! Buy Print

Blue Horizon
Another ultra-macro shot taken in a series of experiments for the cover of the upcoming Ebauche album. This one makes me immediately think of looking out over a deserted beach towards a distant horizon, perhaps after the sun has set and the sky is fading from blue to black. Based on some painting experiments done by Adrianna Snochowska. Buy Print

Shot at the end of November last year, I couldn't quite believe that I was seeing a flower still clinging on. I think it's some type of marigold, and if you look in the out of focus background shadow - that's snow on the ground.

It took some digging to find out what the letters on this striking chimney stood for. On the banks of the Müggelspree stands what was the oldest brewery in Berlin until its closure in 2010. It had been active since 1753!

Berliner Bürgerbräu
It took a bit of digging to find out what the large triple B letters on this striking chimney stood for. On the banks of the Müggelspree which leads into Großer Müggelsee in Berlin, stands what was the oldest brewery in the city until its closure in 2010. It had been active since 1753! You can read more about it on the German wikipedia. It may be quite functional and industrial, but there's something quite elegant to the whole design of the brewery. Buy Print

Pensive Gelada
This beautiful Gelada Baboon is sadly a long long way from the Ethiopian Highlands where it originates, though I am sure that its handlers in Tierpark Berlin take the utmost care and try to ensure the best possible life. Whilst this photograph was taken last summer, I suspect it's harder for these old-world monkeys at this time of year in Berlin. Whilst the Ethiopian Highlands can certainly get cool, I don't think they'll match Berlin winter temperatures! Buy Print

Natural Abstract
The natural world never fails to provide ample fodder for abstract imagery, especially if you can get up nice and close. In this case it's a Polypore, or bracket fungus, on a tree in the beautiful Plänterwald forest in Berlin. I highly recommend reading the Wikipedia article about Polypores - lots of fascinating stuff about these tree fungi that we see in pretty much every forest we visit. Some of them have wonderful common names too - such as "chicken of the woods". Love it! Buy Print

The Light Shines Through
What appears to be a marble floor, wall, or ceiling appears to have, somewhat disconcertingly, light shining through it (not something I'd usually associate with marble). This seemingly solid wall in the James Simon Gallery here in Berlin, I decided must in fact be glass with some marble effect overlay? Perhaps I'm mistaken though. I liked the shapes and leading lines though 😊 Buy Print

King’s Salad
Related to one of my favourite named flowers, the Chocolate Cosmos, I believe this is a Cosmos Caudatus, also known as King's Salad. As you might have guessed, this is an edible plant. Native to Latin America, it was brought by the Spaniards to South East Asia where it now makes for a popular salad in Indonesia and Malaysia. I came across this particular specimen in the slightly less exotic locale of Poland 😁 Buy Print

A zebra peers towards us over the back of their companion. Zebra stripes are quite fascinating to watch. I always liked the hypothesis that en-masse the stripes visually disorient attackers, but it seems that this hypothesis is generally not accepted now. However it does appear that the stripes may in fact have a function of reducing bites from insects. I wonder if I painted stripes on me when I lived in Cambodia would I have had fewer mosquito bites 😁 Fascinating reading on the various zebra-stripe hypotheses over on Wikipedia. Buy Print
