3/3 Still most of #Vaquita Refuge unmonitored, too many gillnetters in parts that are, & too many days of skiffs where vaquita porpoises were recently detected outside ZTA area. It's urgent to eliminate gillnetting to prevent extinction & enable recovery.

Since 2020, Henderson and her colleagues from Mexico and the US had been tracking a group of whales producing a distinctive call, tagged as BW43, which they initially thought was Perrin’s beaked #whale, another species that had never been seen in the wild. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
These rare whales had never been seen alive. Then a team in Mexico sighted two
The search for a ginkgo-toothed beaked whale had taken five years, when a thieving albatross nearly ruined it all

A clip of the active orcas we saw off Bainbridge Island while out with the @whaleresearch.bsky.social yesterday 🤩

In addition to being very surface active, they were also vocalizing, allowing us to get our first-ever Bigg's killer whale calls paired with drone video.

Earlier this week, we were thrilled to witness back to back days of a Southern Resident superpod. Here is our map covering their movements over the course of three days.

A true superpod occurs when all members of the J, K, and L pods gather together in the same location. That’s 74 whales!
