Marie Curie was born #OnThisDay 1867.

Madame Curie visited Glasgow in 1929, being hosted by Professor Archibald Young and Mrs Anna Young.

Here is a photo of Irene Curie, Madame Curie, and Mrs Young enjoying the fresh Scottish air at Loch Fyne 😅

#OTD 1867, Marie Curie was born.

During WWI, Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, a generator, an X-ray machine and photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie also helped train 150 women as radiology technicians.

For what it's worth, I don't think the government should be commenting on every repulsive thing said by Conservative backbenchers. (Though their own leader should take a view).

What it *should* be doing is articulating a clear position of its own. It's *that* silence which is the big problem.
Worth saying that despite asking for more than 12 hours we’ve had nothing back from Labour on this
A Conservative MP tipped as a future party leader has been condemned for saying large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly “culturally coherent”.

I wouldn’t have thought many Labour MPs came into politics to strip the rights of torture survivors to be reunited with the spouses & children.

They need to take a long hard look in the mirror & ask whether Starmer, Cooper & Reeves are really the leadership their careers should be remembered with.

Monday Mindset: Start your week with intention.
Before diving into work, take a moment to check in:
• How are you feeling today?
• What’s one small action to support your wellbeing?
A short walk, clear boundaries, a quick chat - small steps equal big impact.

Austerity 2025

Rachel Reeves wants to reduce UK govt debt i.e. remove money from the economy, cut jobs.

But the state has dumped what was once public debt to households - student debt, borrowing money to pay for energy.

State can never be short of money. People can.

When it's reported that the proposed changes to the benefits system will 'save' £5bn, to do nothing about a level of tax avoidance in the tens or potentially hundreds of £billions as an alternative is obscene.
Transnational companies like Starbucks, Google, Microsoft, eBay, Amazon and others use complex corporate structures to shift profit, avoid taxes.

Apple has parked billions of its global profits in Jersey, has no physical presence.

UK does little to challenge.

Instead, people are bashed.
UK governments are failing to curb corporate tax abuses and leaving people to pay the price
Governments remain obsessed with austerity and choose not to inconvenience the rich or curb tax abuses by corporations.

🔸 Unpaid work limits women's careers
🔸 Gender gaps in time use narrowed in 1980s-2000s but have now stalled
🔸 Men still do little unpaid work & change is too slow

To close these gaps, we need paid parental leave, flexible work & cultural shifts.

#InternationalWomensDay
For #IWD2025, we spoke to Man-Yee Kan & Grace Chang about their research on gender inequality in time use 👩⌛️

The GenTime project tracks how men & women spend time ⏲️

The findings are clear - women still do far more unpaid work than men.
