And unless you are an award-winning design agency, never use more than 3 or at most 4 fonts. EVER.

And get those in within the 1st 10 assets retrieved during the page load.
Most websites are loading fonts wrong.

❌ Google Fonts isn’t “free” (privacy + speed cost)
❌ Icon fonts were a mistake
❌ WOFF2 only - stop shipping TTF/WOFF
❌ Subset or bleed megabytes
❌ Fallbacks matter (and can be tuned!)

You’re loading fonts wrong (and it’s crippling your performance)
Fonts are one of the most visible, most powerful parts of the web. And yet: almost everyone gets them wrong.

And people think LLMs are going to make use of, never mind respect, an LLMs.txt file?

hahaha

Having lived in California most of his career, I saw him for the manipulative, charismatic vulture that he really is long ago.

His views on the homeless, or protecting PG&E, or podcasting with Nazis, for example, are radical on the wrong side.

He is a performative liar. A fascist in Dem clothing.
I knew when I met him, with my young boys looking on, that Gov Gavin Newsom was the real deal.

You don’t become the leader of the 4th biggest worldwide economy by accident.

I’ve seen him up close: super smart, empathic, and authentic.

Our country needs his leadership desperately.

New post is live. A reader asked if having similar steps in a process will create a duplicate content problem for SEO, AIO, GEO, etc... The answer is no.

I share why and a few ways you can have similar steps without competition.

Do Similar Processes Cause Duplicate Content Penalties?
No, sharing similar steps to solve different problems is not a duplicate content issue when you have proper content and code.

Working with GPT takes patience. The clearer my prompts and the more I forgive mistakes, the better the process goes. When a “clear” prompt gets weird results, I try to spot why so I can improve my wording.

Always so grateful when another audit is done and sent out.

And now I have availability for another audit or consulting gig.

Could really use the continued cash flow

FACT:
I have no idea if I will get this position. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity in such a challenging market.

And this audit was fun & challenging for wild reasons.

Whatever unfolds, I am truly grateful.
Wrapping up an audit on "Domain 1." If it clicks, I step in as Director of SEO—overseeing these sites plus 2,300 more.

I would get to architect the revamping of the entire system for maximum SEO / AI value.

Loved my years as a consultant, but ready for my 4th run as a director at a great agency.

Many have never truly understood what SEO is nor how it fits within digital strategy, therefore, what type of skillset is needed. However, in my experience as a teacher/ trainer, someone who doesn't want to be educated will never learn. That is a real problem in life generally.

ENTIRE SITE de-indexed. Client can't figure it out. Hired a technical SEO weeks ago. Can't figure it out.

Me: check Cloudflare. You're the 4the site I've seen with this same issue this week, the previous three were ALL from Cloudflare being overly aggressive.

Client: Oh hey, it was Cloudflare

And @developers.google.com Liz Reid, VP Search at Google, is smoking crack cocaine again.

It's required daily at Google HQ these days in order to keep vomiting the pathetic lies that are so blatantly invalid.
According to Google, "aggregate traffic" and "click quality" are better than ever, even with AI Overviews, and the data circulating in our industry is "often based on flawed methodologies, isolated examples,..."

I may or may not have been approved to speak at an upcoming industry conference.

They have 24 hours to retract their confirmation, in case they get speaker-selection remorse.

Another best practice turns out to be more important in the age of AI.
AI Overviews and AI Mode frequently show the wrong international version of a page, if the content is written in the same language (eg US/UK/AU/IN English)

This is true even when hreflang is set up correctly.

IMO, using a pop-up country selector is more important than ever.
