Not sure how I ended up with so many followers! You all even seem to be real people? In any case, hello out there. I'm a budding historian of the First World War & more generally American & Canadian military + international history. Proud @greatwargroup.bsky.social member!

Sending out good vibes.
New! On my Substack: War Memorial Monday. This summer I'll be sharing war memorials from around the world that I've visited along with stories of the places, people and connections to the war they represent. Today it's francophone communities in Manitoba: open.substack.com/pub/akimling...

Un gros MERCI to the French national archives - emailed looking for some guidance on documents that they not only found for me, but digitized and sent by email. Heroes.

My question is - then how come the Mexican food sucks here? I’ll believe this when I can find a decent burrito.
“Those nasty Canadians are ripping us off and are controlled by Mexican cartels. They’re poisoning us with fentanyl and need to become the 51st state or they will pay a high price” is a belief that literally ZERO Americans had six weeks ago. It’s entirely invented from scratch.

Here's a fact most Americans don't know:
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is the largest purchaser of wine by dollar value in the world.
The LCBO has shut the flow of all American beer, wine, spirits.
We will drink "Freedom wines" from our allies and beer from our communities.

I don’t have a lot of positive thoughts or things to say right now, but here is my cat and she has no idea what a tariff is.

We literally fight and defend ourselves and each other side by side, together.

We manufacture and grow and produce things, together.

This tariff war is complete insanity and self-destructive.

More Gettysburg today, a hike in a less traveled area of the battlefield. Walking the ground like this connects the books and stories to the physical world, and I always leave with a renewed vigor to learn more. Having awesome people to share it with makes it all the better. Happy New Year!

Love that the chief war bore went to see my local war memorial!

City and county workers pass by the names of Ramsey County war dead every day - Memorial Hall in Saint Paul City Hall / Ramsey County Courthouse was dedicated to them, the names are inscribed in marble in this lovely art deco building.
And after Prince, on a tip from @akimlinger.bsky.social the stunning art deco memorial for Ramsay County at the Court House in St. Paul

What are the mental gymnastics you play with yourself to be productive?

When I need to start writing a paper, I have to make the document title something super non-threatening. Right now one my term paper drafts is titled "Blank Page."

For the past few weeks I’ve been knee-deep in the Cold War for my courses, including a project on the Cuban Missile Crisis. So many interesting aspects to it but my favorite thing continues to be how President Kennedy was reading the recently published Guns of August and it influenced his decisions.

Canadians at the Battle of Mount Sorrel, June 1916.

Just a few weeks before the opening of the Battle of the Somme, the Canadians fought magnificently here, especially after initial setbacks.

A significant defeat for the Germans.
