I’ve been thinking about why civics in America feels so broken. Growing up, civics always felt like something far away—federal politics in some overworld for rich people. It was like it happened above us while we were struggling in our everyday real lives. This led me down a path: 🧵

For five years, I have been covering what is unquestionably the biggest criminal justice scandal in American history.

Today it ended when the most corrupt cop in history took his life.

But it's not over.

A thread.

Growing up in a working-poor immigrant household in NYC’s outer boroughs, I saw opportunities—but also the barriers and gaps that let too many fall through the cracks.

Decades later, this election proves we haven’t made enough progress for those scraping by and desperate for any change.

One of our leading magazines, which most members of Congress, reported that the Trump nominee for Defense Secretary chanted ‘ Kill all Muslims!’ and I haven’t seen loads of (any?) elected Dems condemn him for it yet.

It’s almost as if… Islamophobia has been normalized in DC.

“Don’t feed the trolls” also extends to bad opinion pieces in papers of record.

They run them bc people react to them the most.

If we stop linking to bad columns and instead post thinkers we find valuable (& generate convo around it), incentives change.

It’s not easy and takes constant practice!

The argument against regulation is always the same: “It stifles growth and jobs.”

But just as tax cuts for corporations have not trickled down, regulatory cuts have not benefited most people.

Big companies enjoy bigger profits. Working people bear the costs.

Eliminating bus fares won’t just make life more affordable for the 1 in 5 New Yorkers who can’t afford it but can also help speed up the nation’s slowest buses by allowing all-door boarding. @ridersalliance.org

Elon Musk says Americans must suffer the "hardship" of $2 trillion in cuts to public spending, while he still gets tax cuts, government contracts, and corporate welfare.

No wonder I got a little angry talking about it. youtu.be/KXzkNKVLy9g?...

@bmeiselas.bsky.social: I do gotta say, congrats to QAnon, I guess. What a run you guys had, from going after the Deep State and the shadowy billionaires and the child sex traffickers to putting those people in power. You got Trump—Jeffrey Epstein's best friend—going to be president, Matt Gaetz...

What the establishment fails to see is that real people don’t live in the simplistic categories of “left” or “right.” We are shaped by a myriad of overlapping values, experiences, and identities — none of which fit neatly into the parties’ messaging strategies.

Elon Musk spent $45 million to target Black, Jewish, Muslim voters and others with disinformation ads. The ads had lies tailored to target citizens by race and religion to demotivate thems from voting and turn them against Kamala Harris.

The Islamophobia here is telling. When conditions are unlivable, some see any change as better than the status quo. Even then, most Muslims didn’t vote for Trump. The issue isn’t Muslims failing Democrats—it’s Democrats failing Muslims with wars, surveillance, and silence on key issues.

The question of who is to blame for Democrats losing begins and ends with the establishment. They panic selected a 78 year old to stop Bernie Sanders in March of 2020, and then chose a Vice Presidential nominee as a favor to Clyburn.

They had zero fucking plan for 2024. It’s 100% their fault.
