The Trump administration's Memphis intervention has been a rare success (crime down) with fairly competent execution (federal support invited by state, cooperation from local police and city).

Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

Crime dropped after Trump sent officers to Memphis. Not everyone is happy.
A federal task force has helped lower crime and boost arrests in Memphis. But residents say they feel under siege and have complained about racial profiling.

Keir Starmer is right. The death penalty is never the answer for any country. It’s inhumane, costly & doesn’t deter crime. It has no place in the civilised world. Most of Europe abolished the death penalty decades ago & has been better, safer without it:

Post-WWII asylum laws are no longer fit for purpose. The direction of travel -- from Westminster to the Center for American Progress -- is tightening them to prevent abuse and ensure the most vulnerable can actually receive the protection they deserve.

I don’t think it’s factually true that “democrats became more left-wing” is a distinctive observation of progressive pundits, they stopped mentioning it after Trump won in 2024 but Bernie, Jayapal, etc used to talk about this all the time.

What Daniel Lurie is doing in San Francisco is actually closer to the "Nordic approach" than the pseudo-libertarianism of, say, Brandon Johnson. Sometimes societies concerned about well-being and welfare have to be a bit coercive with those individuals experiencing crises.
