Agnes Owens’ writing was championed by Kelman and Gray but she remained mysteriously un-celebrated. “One publisher said people don’t want that kind of writing… about poor people.”

I was at (Catacombe dei Cappuccini, a macabre, necropolis beneath the monastery. Has approximately 9,000 mummified bodies & skeletons,& 1,600 visible mummies in their finest attire, lining the walls in niches or lying in open coffins.

Relatives of the dead visit and wash & comb their hair.

Brilliant, Dani. Great tribute to an outstanding writer. Let’s hope the centenary celebrations bring Agnes Owens to a much wider audience. A Working Mother is a work of art.
It's the centenary of the wonderful Agnes Owens' birth this year. Her books are being reissued & a satellite archive has officially opened within the Alasdair Gray archive. I spoke to her son, John, & wrote about this "most unfairly neglected of Scottish authors" in the @heraldscotland.bsky.social.
Finally, recognition for 'unfairly neglected' Scottish author Agnes Owens

Great piece by @danigaravelli.bsky.social
It is without hyperbole to say that as a writer of short stories Agnes Owens is equal to Flannery O’Connor. And her novellas sit right next to those of Rachel Ingalls.

“She was so good at evoking the claustrophobia and darkness and poverty of economics but plenitude of mind."
An excellent piece on Agnes Owens, by @danigaravelli.bsky.social. Dani has also written the introduction to a new edition of Gentlemen Of The West, which will be published by Polygon in May.

Yes I was there and it was a poor venue, went Glasgow Concert Hall last night to a gig which was great, if only Emmylou Harris had been there .

Have always remembered that you @peteralanross, were one of the first of very few mentions on the BBC to speak well of her and work the day after she died, and thank you for doing so .
