Today marks the Feast of St Mungo, 6th-century missionary and patron saint of Glasgow. Alasdair Gray’s unfinished commission for Glasgow Museums reimagines St Mungo amid modern Glasgow and the Necropolis. This was the in progress backdrop, sadly incomplete due to Gray’s fall in 2015.

On this day in 2019, we lost Alasdair Gray, who passed away at the Royal Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow. A writer & artist whose work left a lasting mark on Scottish culture, Gray’s voice, imagination, and vision continue to resonate through his novels, essays, and artwork.

Born in Riddrie on this day in December 1934, Alasdair Gray became one of Scotland’s most visionary writers and artists, his words and images continue to shape our civic life. We honour his enduring legacy & are proud to continue to champion his legacy and creative spirit ❤️
