About a decade ago, I began a writing exercise meant to help flesh out a world I had created. I kept an ongoing journal of a wandering hero in an ancient fantastical world, documenting experiences that spontaneously appeared in my mind, stream-of-consciousness style.

- Plot out a collection of New Atlantis stories to begin writing in '27
- Continue developing Solkai, preferably with story ideas
- Try out a 3D modeling program (Blender or ZBrush, maybe)

Lately I was inspired to try creating an original species. I gathered various traits I found appealing and mixed them all together to create:

The Solkai.

Given my name is a reference to the light and glory of the sun, it fits that my own species is solar-powered :p

SOLKAI Bipedal semi-aquatic gazelloids, fur-covered with horns on their heads, plumes of vibrant feathers on their arms and tails, and chlorophyll in their blood. That's right... they're solar-powered. REGIONAL DIFFERENCES Climate dictates a lot of notable features for Solkai. Those who live in warmer tropical regions are often taller with thicker, single-shaft horns that lack tines. They also have thinner fur, which makes their bodies appear more toned since it doesn’t hide their muscle definition. Their ears are also broader and are less likely to be tufted, and eye colors are generally darker. Those who live in cooler continental regions are often shorter with thicker fur, which softens their appearance & muscle definition. Additionally, their horns are thinner and have multiple tines, their ears are generally smaller and more likely to have tufts, and their eye color is usually lighter. BIOLOGY Solkai have teal-colored blood. This is due to the presence of both hemocyanins and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll serves as a way to saturate their blood with more oxygen, increasing its efficiency while also enhancing their stamina. Solkai skin contains phycobilin-producing chloroplasts just beneath their hair follicles. Thanks to their fur and plumage being clear and somewhat hollow, sunlight can be absorbed and concentrated onto the skin. Their wings serve mainly as a sunlight collection medium, as their feathers contain the highest concentrations of chloroplasts, which in turn produce glucose & oxygen. The keratin present in the feathers interact with phycobilin to give them a unique property of scattering different wavelengths of light to produce a multitude of colors. The variations of these colors are a result primarily of diet, and the keratin gives the colors a subtle metallic sheen. Fur also contains keratin that alters colors in a similar manner, but these are more dependent on genetics than diet. Horns have bioluminescent lateral cells. Exact patterns are unique to each Solkai. CULTURE Solkai are normally peaceful in nature. While aggression is not unnatural (they are capable of a full gamut of emotions, after all), the vast majority of them lean toward calmer and often altruistic alignments. Green is typically associated with the connection between life and death, since this is also closest to the color of Solkai blood. It is a third, balanced attitude between the passion of warm colors and the calmer moods of cool colors. This in turn gives Solkai a particular insight on death as a part of reality, not always negative, but something that reminds them of seasonal change and the capacity to live with purpose. And yes, since their fur & plumage collect sunlight, they are always naked. (Depictions of genitalia are optional.)
