New paper out w @davidbritain.bsky.social & T. Blaxter: Using data from 50K speakers, we show that many once-distinctive English regional terms have sharply declined. Even the northern backend for ‘autumn’ now survives only at low rates, mostly among older, less mobile speakers. tinyurl.com/39uy4x5e

New paper out – Why do Swiss Germans struggle with the English STRUT vowel (but, sun, up)? It doesn’t exist in Swiss German. Findings: KV > Gymi, boys > girls, Netflix/music/gaming ≈ no effect.

🇨🇭📖 Früher war das Sofa ein Statussymbol des Adels, heute steht es in fast jedem Haushalt. Sofa stammt aus dem Arabischen, Kanapee aus dem Französischen, Ggu(u)tschi wohl aus dem Italienischen. Während Sofa immer dominanter wird, halten sich Kanapee & Co. v. a. im Süden.

Unbekannter Anruf – wie meldest du dich? Ältere sagen oft nur „Ja?“ oder ihren Nachnamen. Jüngere überraschen: Sie nennen häufiger Vor- und Nachnamen. Offenbar spielt der Wunsch nach klarer Identifikation und Individualität eine grössere Rolle als vermutet – auch regional unterschiedlich.
