One of the few running perks for the new house is that there is a Trader Joe’s nearby. They have “Danish Kringle”, finally in the almond flavor: The closest thing I have found to actual Danish Wienerbrød. It’s a nice after-run treat. [2890] #AirWreckRuns

I broke the 5 minutes per kilometre for the first time since I started daily running again. So I’m starting to feel back to normal. Distance still isn’t great but I have to pick my battles. [2889] #AirWreckRuns

I started my evening run in a haze, with the smell of smoke in the air. I didn’t hear sirens, so I’m assuming a neighbour’s fire pit and not a house on fire. Hopefully not the large forest nearby that I like to run through. The smell was gone by the time I got home. [2888] #AirWreckRuns

I haven’t run after dark in nearly a month. My body isn’t used to it: it can’t handle a full stomach while running anymore; that used to be a staple ability for ultramarathons. Instead I had to stop and burp every so often, despite the slow pace. [2887] #AirWreckRuns

There are Christmas decorations still out. And if you time it right, you can get a picture of a crane coming in for a landing. [2886] #AirWreckRuns

This is a nice neighbourhood. It’s a shame to see a car abandoned at the side of the road. [2885] #AirWreckRuns

First Ballast run of the year. I’m feeling weak on my runs. Is it the extra weight? The headwind? Or just that I am out of practice? I’m trying to force more daily running so hopefully I’ll get my fitness back soon. [2884] #AirWreckRuns

First run of the year. The mountain bikers have cleared the Hogzilla trails beautifully. Last time I checked it, it was inpassably overgrown. My biggest obstacle was one (1) fallen tree, where others had already made a path around. Thank you bikers! [2883] #AirWreckRuns

Last run of the year. Five years ago I did 5897km of running. This year I did 2032km. Ugh. That’s depressing. I think I’ll try and get back to daily running for the new year. It didn’t help today’s run that the Ballast was dragging a stick on the ground for a lot of it. [2882] #AirWreckRuns

There is a neighbourhood in Houston called the “Energy Corridor”. (It has a lot of petroleum companies, just off I-10, which goes all the way to California.) In my head, I keep calling it gasoline alley. I miss Alberta. [2881] #AirWreckRuns

Christmas Day: I can run on golf courses. Lovely and peaceful; even the birds are calm. The links provide some of the only places for hill training in this town. [2880] #AirWreckRuns 1/4

If I wanted plants, and pots, I could make out like a bandit here. Some with flowers even. [2879] #AirWreckRuns

Since I had the time, today’s run was special. It wasn’t long, it wasn’t scenic, it wasn’t original. It was me picking up the Ballast from day care and running her home. As long as she has her apple juice, she doesn’t complain. [2878] #AirWreckRuns

I think the real reason that I’m finding it hard to motivate myself to run these days, is that this is a boring neighbourhood with not a lot of choice for running routes. Most of the time it just comes down to clockwise or counterclockwise. Same McMansions either way. [2877]

I didn’t expect to be able to complete Marywood Chase today, if ever: it has one of the more elaborate gates I’ve seen and looks really rich behind it. But then a car left while I was passing through, and you have to take the opportunities when they come. 1/4 [2876] #AirWreckRuns

Balloons thrown out as trash; waiting to be picked up as garbage. The sad end to a party. At the very least, you should have popped them to hide the tragedy. [2875] #AirWreckRuns

It’s been a week and a half since my last run, but I’m in the middle of moving. This was my first run from the new house so I’m experimenting with routes. Unfortunately it is still in the same neighbourhood, so nothing new to see. [2874] #AirWreckRuns

For American Thanksgiving, I took the Ballast out with me to pre-burn some calories. She found a stick beforehand and proudly waved it about for the entire run. This year, I am thankful for: she didn’t hit anyone we passed. [2873] #AirWreckRuns

I did some exploring in the old neighbourhood; I checked out a trail that has been completely overgrown every previous time I’ve tried it. Today, it was gloriously cleared: wide enough two cars could pass each other. [2872] #AirWreckRuns 1/2

The number of times I run has dropped a lot since I stopped doing consecutive running. If I don’t have that pressure to keep up the streak, I’m only running 1 - 2 days a week. I’m busy right now, which is my excuse. That won’t last forever. Will I ever really go back to running? [2871] #AirWreckRuns

A run in a new neighborhood for my birthday. There are some halloween decorations up. And I did see some inflatable Thanksgiving turkeys. But there are now Christmas decorations popping up. (Do you think the letters to Santa go to Canada? Does Rudolph look envious?) [2870] #AirWreckRuns
November 17, 2025 at 4:16 AM
There are not a lot of Thanksgiving decorations up. This is the only one of note. But as a rule, the locals don’t put up a lot for this holiday, despite it being a bigger day than Christmas. [2869] #AirWreckRuns

A longer run in a different area. I made the mistake of doing the run on an empty stomach at lunchtime while passing a bunch of Mexican restaurants that smelled really good. [2868] #AirWreckRuns 1/3

The Ballast scraped her knee right before we went on our run. So I was subjected to performative crying the entire time. Unless there was a doggy visible: those got happily pointed out. And she was happy enough at the end. Drama queen. [2867] #AirWreckRuns
November 5, 2025 at 5:54 AM
I have a 5km loop I’m using to get back into running. It’s cooler these days so I can take The Ballast with me more often. I let her choose which direction to go, but she seems to always pick clockwise. Maybe she likes heading towards the setting sun. [2865] #AirWreckRuns
