How the FUCK do we live in a country where a war criminal signing bombs to be dropped on Palestinian kids is an honoured guest of our government but a woman author pleading for her people not be slaughtered is a dangerous subversive who must be banned from writer’s festivals forthwith?

Imagine your country gets invaded, your people are subjected to a rolling genocide for 180 years before the colonists even let you vote, 240 years later your Voice to parliament is rejected, then the first racial hatred legislation introduced by the colonial government isn’t even about you.

ninety people who have withdrawn from AWW are listed at the end of this article, with two especially notable, Richard Fidler and Julia Baird, given the number of ABC big names who have not withdrawn (but still can! It’s not too late mate).

As a former Director of Adelaide Writers' Week I am appalled that the Adelaide Festival Board has rescinded Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah's invitation to the 2026 AWW, explicitly linking its decision to the shattering crimes in Bondi.

A shocking decision that will and should have far-reaching consequences.

Instead of highlighting "a" single voice, a more illuminating headline might focus on why 55 literary and journalistic luminaries felt it necessary to withdraw from Adelaide Writers' Week and how Mali's mini-Minns antics trashed the reputation of one of his state's best assets.

My information is that this is an out and out lie.

It's extraordinary that the SA Premier sees no problem trashing the reputation of one of the few organisations in his state that is internationally celebrated as a leader in its field.

Oh look! In 2024, the Festival Board recognised that an international reputation for supporting artistic freedom of expression was worth protecting.

(Note too that despite News Corp's desperate framing, Friedman was NOT uninvited from the 2024 Writers' Week)
I have been sent a copy of Adelaide Festival's response to the letter raising concerns about Thomas Friedman's participating in Adelaide Writers Week.

The response says that Friedman could not participate due to "last minute scheduling issues".

“Get Smart” premieres 60 years ago tonight, on NBC.

“I was sick of looking at all those nice, sensible situation comedies,” Mel Brooks said. “They were such distortions of life. .. No one had ever done a show about an idiot before. I decided to be the first.”
