Last night the govt refused my amendment to this legislation. I'll keep fighting the Albanese govt to dismantle JRG.

By delaying its own pledge to undo the Morrison‑era Job‑Ready Graduates scheme, the government is retaining a punitive and inequitable policy that’s damning students to decades of excessive debt.

This week we’re debating a bill to set up a new body to oversee Commonwealth contributions to the cost of education - but it’s not been tasked at looking at how much the C’wealth is charging students.

More than 2.9 million Australians carry, on average, more than $27,000 in HECS debt.
The government’s HECS Bill swings and misses on student debt

Local, state, and federal governments are well aware of this problem. I'll continue working with them to improve road safety. We have to keep residents safe and protect their streets.

Kew residents have had to put up with hooning and damage to local roads for years. It’s not just the noise disruption in a beautiful part of Kooyong, it's the knowledge that it’s only a matter of time before we see a nasty accident from unsafe driving and racing.
‘Dangerous, intrusive, relentless’: Push for fresh crackdown at this hoon hotspot
One resident near Yarra Boulevard says he calls Triple Zero five times a week, while the City of Boroondara mayor likens the noise to the grand prix.

Submissions to the parliamentary inquiry into the CSIRO have a consistent theme.

Funding of public science and medicine in Australia is too fragmented, short-term, and reactive. It ignores the fact that sovereign capacity for R&D is essential national infrastructure.

Last year, for the first time, alcohol and gambling companies, and their lobby groups, donated more than $5m to the major parties. Looks like they are getting a reasonable return on their investment.

Last month, the Federal Parliament legislated stronger gun and hate speech laws aimed at preventing acts of violence and attempted violence. If we don’t enforce our laws—equally and fairly—we don’t protect all Australian communities.

On January 26, an explosive device was allegedly thrown into a crowd of peaceful protesters in Perth. As I said last week—and again today in Parliament—this should be investigated as a potential act of terrorism and treated with the gravity it deserves by state and federal police forces.

950 days after the Murphy Report into gambling reform was released, the Albanese government hasn’t responded to a single one of its recommendations. Meanwhile, Australians lose almost $90 million every day to online gambling and pokies. It’s time to ban the advertising of online gambling.

It’s a start, but not enough. We have unspent billions in the Medical Research Future Fund which the govt could release tomorrow—to support a valuable and innovative industry, and save even more Australian lives.
January 30, 2026 at 2:26 AM
Medical research matters. It’s great to see the govt give $40 million to FightMND to improve data collection, access to clinical trials and new therapies for motor neurone disease. Neale Daniher is an extraordinary man, and this funding helps cement his legacy.

This sort of event should be viewed as an act of terrorism and treated with the gravity it deserves by state and federal police forces.

We still have a long way to go to hand over a safer future, and this week's dangerous heatwave & destructive fires remind us what's at stake if we keep approving new coal and gas. Yet, in the middle of severe climate and cost of living challenges, a clean energy surge is something to celebrate.
January 29, 2026 at 12:30 AM
The march towards a renewables-powered future is happening, in spite of ongoing climate denialism from the Liberal and National parties—whose decision to scrap net zero hangs over their latest infighting and leadership challenges.
January 29, 2026 at 12:30 AM
For the first time, clean energy has supplied the majority of electricity in our main grid for a full three months. And, because renewables are dominating new supply and easily the cheapest source of new energy, our bills were cheaper as a result. Win, win! reneweconomy.com.au/landmark-mom...
"Landmark moment:" Prices plunge as renewables supply half of grid, batteries surge and coal hits new low
Record renewables and storage, falling prices and emissions, lowest coal and plunging gas delivers much needed boost for federal government's energy transition.

Join my campaign calling on the Albanese government to name heatwaves and save lives: www.moniqueryan.com.au/heatwave_pet...
Name Heatwaves. Save Lives.
Fossil-fuelled heatwaves kill more Aussies than bushfires, floods and storms. Let’s name them like we do cyclones to protect people from deadly heat.

Effective public health communications start with statements of fact. As temperatures climb, lives are lost. Naming heatwaves – even better, naming them after the entities most responsible for their intensification – would be a small but significant step in aligning causation with consequence.
January 27, 2026 at 8:23 PM
Causation matters. Major fossil fuel polluters know their products are heating our planet, but they continue to choose delay and doubt over responsibility.
January 27, 2026 at 8:23 PM
We name cyclones, because naming helps communicate risk, drive health responses & lodge events in public memory. Is it time to consider naming our most deadly climate hazard after the companies most responsible for heat-intensifying emissions? I think so.

www.thenewdaily.com.au/opinion/2026...
As temperatures to rise, it's time to name heatwaves what they are
We should start by calling heat what it is – a silent killer – and by asking those who profit from it to own their share of that harm.

Heat kills, and it’s time the Albanese government did something about it.

After record heat scorched Vic today, I’m kicking off a campaign to name heatwaves & save lives.

While we’re at it, perhaps we should name deadly heat after those making the biggest contribution. Heatwave Woodside, anyone?
January 27, 2026 at 10:00 AM
Heatwaves kill more Australians than floods, fires and cyclones combined.

If we named them, we could treat them as the public health emergencies they are.

Should we name them after the fossil fuel companies that contribute to them?
