Absalom Jones purchased his wife's freedom before acquiring his own. Civic leader, Episcopal priest, & American founder, he formed the Free African Society 1787, cared for Philadelphians in 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic, petitioned Congress re 1793 fugitive slave law, raised Black troops 4 War of 1812.
