David Britain, Paul Foulkes, David Willis and I have been awarded 2.5M CHF by SNSF & AHRC for CURLEW – the first major survey of English dialects in England & Wales in 75+ years. Starts: 2026 – posts to come. Outputs: papers + a public dialect atlas 🗺️ 📸 Drafting the proposal, Bern, Jan 2025.

💡 The idea that children drive language change is widely accepted — but does it hold up?

New research co-authored by Dr Vera Kempe challenges this view, showing little evidence that child-led innovations spread through communities.

Talking of -isms!!
Finding stock images of non-white people is slowly getting better, but if you want to find silhouette icons of 'people' they are still clearly silhouettes of white people.

For example, results of the Google Image search term "silhouette mother"

Fab workshop at QMU, run by my EdiUni colleague @christianilbury.bsky.social & Grace Mai Clark, Edi's 93% Club President. QMU may have fewer problems with elitism, but we can all do more to tackle #accentism, along with other -isms, at our unis. Let’s make the most of the momentum that is building.
