"NSF employees are committed to serving the American people. But they cannot do so under fear, censorship & institutional sabotage. Without immediate oversight & corrective action from Congress one of our nation’s greatest engines for scientific & technological advancement faces irreversible damage.
We, the undersigned members of American Federation of Government Employees Local 3403 (AFGE 3403), who work at the National Science Foundation (NSF), write to you with deep concern over a series of politically motivated and legally questionable actions by the Administration that threaten the integrity of the NSF and undermine the civil service protections guaranteed under federal law. As civil servants, NSF employees are bound by their oath to uphold the Constitution. That oath now compels us to call attention to actions that jeopardize NSF's mission, its independence, and the foundational laws that protect the federal workforce from politicization and abuse. The sweeping and sudden termination of hundreds of NSF employees this year, including senior staff and those managing Congressionally mandated programs, was not only damaging to the agency's functioning but appears to violate the letter and spirit of title 5, the body of law establishing the professional, apolitical civil service, and is we would argue an unlawful impoundment of funds appropriated by Congress to advance American scientific research.

Today, 1,152 NAS members/Nobel Laureates (as private individuals) sent a letter to Congress regarding the cuts to science being proposed by the Administration, and currently going through the House and Senate Appropriations Committees.

The bottom line with the proposed cuts to NSF is to cut the number of working scientists and disappear opportunities to train new scientists.

This is a PROPOSED budget to Congress. Call your reps.

Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.

But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.

In light of the skinny budget (55.8% reduction), 6 past NSF directors and 7 NSB chairs have sent the House Committee on Appropriations a letter advising doubling the NSF budget.

"We face a fork in the road. Do we want to win or concede the race for new knowledge and a competitive STEM workforce?"
Key paragraph of letter: We believe these challenges can be met, but not with the draconian budget plan and staffing reductions just released by OMB. Such a budget would thwart scientific progress, decimate the research workforce, and take a decade or more to recover. Achieving the President’s vision requires a major enhancement of the NSF budget, ideally a doubling of the FY25 level over the next few years and sufficient staff to execute this vision. In the current political climate, we know this is a bold request. We make it, nonetheless, to say -- if we truly wish to realize this vision, we must commit to a historic investment in fundamental research and education in a manner that leaves no doubt about the United States’ intentions with our international competitors. We face a fork in the road. Do we want to win or concede the race for new knowledge and a competitive STEM workforce? For 75 years winning that race has been the foundation of American prosperity and national security. Adopting the proposed cuts would fast-track China’s plans for technological dominance. As Senator Todd Young said in his March 25th Washington Post op-ed, “…Our policymakers should lock arms with the science-and-technology dreamers and doers across the country — from Silicon Valley to the Silicon Prairie — and recognize that basic research isn’t a federal handout to help sustain academia. Instead, it is a vital ingredient in our innovation future, economic and geopolitical competitiveness, and national security.” signatures of past NSF directors and NSB chairs

Dean Erwin Chemerinsky of UC Berkeley Law says he is trying to get a letter signed by other law school deans to call on law firms not to buckle under threats from the Trump administration.

He says it has been very hard to get many to sign.
