Executive Director of NISO - Facilitating information exchange through standards. And wine. And photographs. And maybe some other stuff too. Otherwise, it’s turtles all the way down. @TAC_NISO elsewhere on the web. Thoughts and opinions are my own, because
Thanks to the amazing team at @chashub.bsky.social for hosting another wonderful Charleston conference. As always, it was a productive and enjoyable week. We appreciate all the hard work that goes into executing this event! #CHSCon25

Dempsey: No longer are librarians focused on collection management, they are moved to strategic questions around how and what to collect and how the ecosystem functions and how library resources should be distributed to meet institutional goals.
November 5, 2025 at 2:34 PM
Dempsey:
Libraries are not independent or stand alone, they are always embedded in an institution or society.

Library is always relational to their users and community

Therefore Libraries are not static, they are dynamic, constantly evolving and adapting to changing tech & user needs.

Remember when Aaron Swartz downloaded JSTOR archives that he had full legal rights to download and the FBI hounded him literally to death for it? Anyway,
NEW: Common Crawl, the massive archiver of the web, has gotten cozy with AI companies and is providing paywalled articles for training data. They’re also lying to publishers who have asked for material to be removed. “The robots are people too,” CC’s exec director told us when we asked about this.
The Nonprofit Feeding the Entire Internet to AI Companies
Common Crawl claims to provide a public benefit, but it lies to publishers about its activities.

It used to be that (redacted) library would support #OpenAccess fees and that was split across the library and the administration, but now none of them have the money. So we will
Only pay for #OA fees, if the grant requires it and there is no other source of funding

Elon Musk’s Grokipedia is one of many experiments designed to replace human-generated writing with LLMs. But Ryan McGrady argues that its defining feature is its use of technological power to re-exert top-down authority over information and knowledge.

Thank you to the dedicated government employees who are working today despite the wretched and incompetent leadership in DC. Your commitment to the citizens of this country should put those Congressmen to shame. Someone appreciates your service! #shutdown25

Musk is aiming to fill the internet with AI schlock with his new Wikipedia knock off. I tried it out and it is exactly what you might expect from a troll-centered AI bot. It’s right about 60% of the time, filled with specious citations and false information

Some friend of Donald’s anonymously donated $130 million to pay military salaries. Or roughly $10 per active duty personnel. A kind gesture. However, I wonder what they should be paying in taxes and whether they’ve fought against cutting taxes on the rich?
